#848272 - 07/04/04 07:19 AM A ? for knowledgeable breeders....

Ok first off I don't have the room to grow 100's of plants and pick the best moms & dads so I wouldn't call this a very good breeding project but I want to start learning and play around.

I want to use prue Asian strains like Dalat,VB, and Thai as the foundations. The first goals would be to keep it very Sativa,(no Indicas,or very little)thicken up the buds(denser)knock flowering times down to at least 12 weeks (9-10 would be better) and keep the high up and soaring...very little body to it....the last goal would be to work on taste and height. I would want this greared towards indoor growing.

I also already have some nice Thai and Dalat hybirds that some good moms might be found in when I start growing them.

What strains would you suggest to use for this and why?
Am thinking African genetics would be a good place to start.
Thx.

How much room do you have or plan on devoting to breeding? I would recommend at least two seperate rooms, the larger the better. What kind of growing technique or method do you plan on using? Will you be growing organically, with chemicals or both? Since this is a indoor project, what kind of lights are you using and what kind of equipment do you have? There is more information that I need to begin to help you. Please, be as specific as possible about everything you can think of. Very important, I must know the size and square footage of the intended grow area.

Thx.
very small right now....I can flower about 8 moms at a time.
Here are the room specs.
12 sqf
Light: 250MH & 400HPS under 1 hood
These are just standard bulbs right now...soon I will replace the HPS with a Growlux and the MH with one of the new CMH.
I grow in passive hydro(hand watered)Perlite/vermiculite and coir mix with organic nutes. PBP,Foxfarm Tiger bloom,Liquid Karma,Maxi Crop and Guano teas.
A 4" Elicent fan cools the light and an 8" Elicent fan vents the room.
My RH runs about 40% in veg and hit 70% in flower last time.
I need to deal with that still. Temps are running right now
85º lights on and 75º lights out on a 18/6 schedule.

Am going to buy a Mills Pride closet to keep moms and dads in Bonsai under flourescents real soon.

Need any more info just ask....I keep pretty good records.

I posted this questions at 2 other sites also....looking for as much input as I can. Here is a copy & paste of my response to one of them...it might give you some insight of what am doing right now and my train of thought.

" I just started some Crystal Locomotive BX1 which is the Trainwreck clone X Aloha White Widow,a male from this cross was then used to pollinate the original Trainwreck clone....it's done by jojorizo @ CW

I also just germed Delta Queen which is Passion Friut X VB a cross by Scropion @ CGI

I have two online buddys who are going to send me some pollen.
1 Dalat and 1 Red Drac....the Red Drac is VB X a red highland vietnam stavia which he has had for years.

This will be my starting point for right now.....am going to cross both the CL and PF X VB with these two males.
The plan of attack after that would be take some cuttings of the moms and keep them, grow those crosses out and use a male from that and backcross to the original moms. After that am not sure,it depends on how those turn out.

Am looking into African genes for pure sativas with short flower times and potency...that will probably be the next route. Unless someone comes up with a better idea. I have some of DWD's original Dalat beans (3) and some of his f2's or f3's am not sure which ones those are and a Dalat X C99 cross....they might come into play also....it's going to take a long time to do this right with my limited space"

Hold your flowering time concerns for last, bring in a Burmese, or a Killer Haze, and ya won't need many offspring for the F1s, mebbe 30, then you want to select best fems (2 mebbe) and best males (2 mebbe) and THEN you want to incross these and make a lot of beans, cuz in your F2s is where you will find your target "types" to breed further - try and keep at least two lineages seperate but close, so at like f5 or whatever you can restore some vigor via the mild hybrid inducement crossing the separate lines ` but still close enough to retain the truebreeding traits you like expressed My .02 mang

Are you shure about the square feet being right. That would be like two feet by two feet by three feet, and to have eight plants in that area! The formula for square footage is length x width x height. This information is very important to begin helping you! Even if you had the space 4' x 1' x 3' = 12 sq. ft. That would not be enough area to grow eight plants! To do that you would have keep them pruned and trained always. Basically, bonsiaing the plants! You would not be able to see the diverse characteristics in the strain, except for some like potency, taste, aroma, and color. Height you would be unable to breed for at all in that area! It would take decades just to breed for one trait let alone any of the others in that kind of area. Can you increase your grow room any?
