At 7:30 PM tonight (Thursday, April 29), Oakville's small NDP community will be meeting at the downtown Central Library to nominate a candidate for the upcoming Federal election. Alison Myrden is one of the contenders. If anyone is in the neighbourhood, come on by and offer your support.
I've never been to a nominating meeting before. I know only registered members of the NDP can vote, but I presume any member of the general public can attend. I joined the NDP a few months ago, so I'm looking forward to having a say in the nominating process.
FYI: Oakville is a suburb of Toronto with a population of about 130 000. It is one of the wealthiest communities in Canada and, as one might expect, is very conservative. The NDP has always run candidates here but none have ever made a blip on the radar screen.
The current MP is Liberal only because the conservative vote was split between Reform/Alliance and Progressive Conservative. Now that Canada's right wing has united under a single Conservative Party, it's as likely as not the Liberal MP will lose her seat.
As the former Oakville NDP riding association president recently stated regarding fighting Oakville's conservatives, "we could run Jesus Christ and they could run Charles Manson and they'd still win." That said, a strong NDP candidate could at least call the opposing candidates to task during election debates. Oakville's about the last place on the planet that would knowingly elect a left-wing pro-pot MP, but it'll still be fun flustering all those conservatives!
PM me if you're thinking of coming so we can try to meet up. It's always fun to put a face to a forum member!
(Directions: Take QEW to Trafalgar exit. Go South to Lakeshore Rd. Turn right (west). The Library is on the NW corner of Lakeshore and Navy, the last intersection before the bridge over Oakville Harbour. If you take a left at Navy, then an immediate right, you can drive down the hill along the river's edge and park in the lot at the base of the library.)

We have a candidate!! Uncontested, Alison Myrden was welcomed with a standing ovation as the NDP candidate for the Oakville riding for the next federal election, whenever it actually gets called. A small, enthusiastic gathering of NDP members from Oakville, Burlington and surrounding Halton region met at the Oakville library. We listened to lots of empassioned, energizing speeches from an old guard that is obvioulsy thrilled with the momentum brought by Jack Layton. The polls are showing increased support for the NDP - about the best numbers in twenty years - and those who have been struggling all this time are seeing new hope. It gave the meeting a great sense of optimism and potential, even in the face of such a conservative riding. Alison presented a strong message that touched on many NDP issues, garnering applause throughout. She spoke passionately about drug law reform, to which the applause was a little less forthcoming. Obvioulsy, we need to work on bringing the grassroots of the party into full support of this part of the overall platform. Despite that noticeably tentative moment, the Oakville riding association members were obviously thrilled to have Alison as their new candidate, as evidenced by the THOUSANDS of dollars that were donated on the spot! It was great to meet Alison face-to-face. I look forward to putting up signs all around town emblazoned with her name! I also enjoyed seeing a few other forum members including Goodster, Goodster's Wife and Escapegoat.

NEW DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF CANADA
April 30th, 2004
MARIJUANA LEGALIZATION ACTIVIST ALISON MYRDEN -- NDP'S NEW OAKVILLE CANDIDATE
WILL KICK OFF CAMPAIGN AT MILLION MARIJUANA MARCH - TOMORROW, SATURDAY, MAY 1, 2004, AT NOON - QUEEN'S PARK, TORONTO
Email: pr@alisonmyrden.ca
Web: alisonmyrden.ca
BURLINGTON, Ont. -- Alison Myrden, one of the nation's leading patient advocates for medical marijuana, is proud to announce she has accepted the nomination for the Federal New Democratic Party for the riding of Oakville, Ontario (Riding 35060).
Myrden, who has a background in corrections and medical secretarial work, decided to step forward last November. "What impressed me most, aside from the NDP's commitment to Health Care, was the NDP's commitment to Canadian sovereignty, as well as Jack Layton's record on Toronto City Council. The NDP's much-appreciated support for the modernization of our marijuana laws also played a role in my decision."
"I suffer from Chronic Progressive Multiple Sclerosis, as well as Tic Douloureux - an unbearable pain in my face which lasts 24 hours a day. Until I started using marijuana as medicine, I was bound to my wheelchair. Now, thanks to this wonderful plant, I have much better quality of life. So much, in fact, that I can find the energy to run for Parliament and promote the interests of disabled Oakville residents and all Canadians," says Myrden.
"I'm looking forward to helping Canada's NDP team," concluded Alison.
