Damn bum deal about the fire 'Taz... While reading Yell (s) post about the 4" pipe, I got to wondering... Just how Big of a root mass are we talking about anyway? I've seen 'Bubbler' root balls I don't think you could get into a 4" pipe. BUT, I wonder... If ya took a foot and a half section of 1 1/2" PVC pipe and cut it in half 'length wise' and glued it to the inside bottom of the big pipe directly under the pot hole, couldn't this be a By-Pass to prevent back-flooding? I saw that Lowes has 8" pipe for US$ 23 per 10' length but nothing bigger. L8R & Peace...

I have one question about your fantastic set up. Why do you need to glue the small baskets to the plastic and then place the entire piece in a larger basket rim. Would the small basket not support a plant on its own if it were placed dirrectly into the pvc? Sorry if you've answered this already but I've read the post a few times and all I can see is that you say it is neccissary if you don't want to use extra medium but I can't figure out why. Sudo

Yes the small basket would support the plant. but the reason for the big hole is to get the root system out when the plant is ready to be harvested. It is easier to get the roots through a 3 1/2 hole rather than a 2" hole .. the second reason is the cut 3 1/2 basket acts as a wedge \ / so the glued 2 " basket and corrogated plastic wedge into place . this prevents any tipping of the plants. re Jimbo { it would work if you kept your plants small enough. }
