Does anyone have any experience/info on chronic, persistent, maddening tinnitus(ringing in the ears)?

Unfortunatly, after many years in Rock&Roll, my ears will not stop ringing.

No question that it can be maddening, annoying, and sometimes down right debilitating. I've known quite a few people with it. Nobody has a good time with it and I'm sorry to say the best you can do is to grin and bear it.

Try to greatly limit your exposure to loud noises. That is about the only thing you can do.

Doctors have put friends on all kinds of drugs to mellow them out so they can sleep, but the only thing I have seen work without serious side effects is weed.

The thing to keep in mind is that exposure to noise reduces tolerance for noise. It's a downward spiral if you don't limit your exposure.

On the other side of things.... if you treat your ears well, the volume will probably slowly diminish (until you get around loud things again). Eventually, you learn to ignore it 99.99% of the time.

Good luck & peace.

I did last year - turned out it be TMJ. Are you a grinder?

BakedBaker, could you expand on this:"if you treat your ears well, the volume will probably slowly diminish (until you get around loud things again)"

grinding your teeth when you sleep, or while your awake could cause it. the full name of TMJ escapes me right now but it is the result of constent grinding. I have tinnitus. its not realy loud. i have learned to live with it. My hearing is going too. and i am only 19... to much loud music.

I just mean to say that if you avoid a lot a loud noise, things will slowly get a little better. My ringing will get less and less until I get around something loud. Even things like highway noise can make it worse. Any time I work with power tools I use professional quality ear plugs and ear muff style protectors too.

I can never play with firecrackers anymore, and I don't even go to concerts now.

If I listen to the radio too loud, the amount of noise required to cause a big ring in my ears gets less and less.

I know its very tough in the beginning to ignore, but with time it will become easier and easier to ignore it.

Good luck!

Thanks, I'm actally enquiring for my dad, he's been living with it for a while, he had a flare up recently and I was wondering if pot could help the symptoms.
Your responses regarding grinding ( he is a big grinder during his sleep) and loud noises causing flare-ups ( he is a machinist) are key pieces of info, thanks alot.

Splynn hit it; I can't remember the full name for TMJ either. I started night grinding after I was assaulted (stress-induced grinding led to TMJ) - ask your dad if he's got little clicks or popping sounds in his jaw, headaches, jaw swelling. Didn't know I was doing it until my husband told me. Had bad ringing for a while - benefits are gone so I couldn't afford to get the mouthguard from the dentist. I'm in Alberta - got a do-it-yourself mouthguard kit from Shopper's Drug Mart. It was about $35 CDN - designed by a dentist - easy to do and saves big $$$. An excellent substitute for the dental piece if your dad wants to try it.
