how important is it that the area around the fan is covered/sealed? I noticed that you said if the fan does not fit to cut a whole in lid and place the fan in there. Is this to keep area around the fan sealed up a bit? Or could I attach the fan to the top of the bucket without the lid and have about 1-2" around the fan exposed? I have everything but the lid (and my fan is smaller than the bucket) so I thought I'd find out if this is neccesary?

Thanks to Growbaby and 4Free for an effective, safe, and cheap odor control mod. I've built one of the 'ONA Buckets' using a 5 gallon (drilled holes around near top, about 1" spacing) pail; 10 parts water to 1 part ONA liquid; and a cup or so of Homegrown Hydroponics version of Soil Moist. A 4" Muffin fan is mounted on the lid. Works like a dream. It's been running a week and doing wonders for the quite dank smelling Dutch Shiva that's almost ready for harvest.
In response to the previous post, I would say it is fairly important that the remaining lid area (if any) be closed. I get incredible flow with the 4". I think the evaporation rate of the ONA would be much quicker with too much open area at the lid. I'm going to monitor evap rates to see how expensive an odor option this is (or how stinky my crop is!;-). So far, I'm greatly impressed (and relieved). I think I will build a mini version using a 1 gallon pail with a small computer fan. This would work great for smoking times, while the bigger bucket handles ongoing grow room chores.
Thanks for all the great advice. Here's one happy reader.
Cheers

Ok... last post on this thread... promise I've tried some local "concentrated" odor neutralizers, and I'm not too impressed thusfar. However, my fan on my bucket is an old computer fan, and I don't think it moves much air. I need to get a bigger fan Anyway... just in case it is still not strong enough, does anybody know of any Canadian websites I can order ONA concentrate from? I've been searching, and no local vendors carry this stuff. Didn't somebody post a place in Calgary, Alberta that sold it?

Oh, and one mod that I have made, which seems to make the bucket more effective. I have since made the air flow holes the size of quarters. I have only about 10 around the bucket now, and I have built a few more for friends that have cats, hehe.
