Note: Long Post, thanks in advance to those that read and can assist.
I have someone very close to me that has just been diagnosed with breast cancer. I want to be able to provide them with as much concise, proven information/studies that show how cannabis can help.
When she spoke about cannabis as an option to another family member, this is what she recieved back in response.
--------------------------------------------------- "Cannabis as a cure for cancer is a total total myth! No judgement on the behaviour, just stating unbiased science. It may relieve some symptoms like pain and decreased appetite, but it has been shown in like 100s of studies to decrease immune functioning and should NOT be taken by someone with a compromised immune system, unless they are palliative (ie uncurable and goign to die soon anyways). This is common knowledge within scientific communities. I can provide references, if needed that most lay people can't decipher (like cytokines, t-cells, etc).
The rumour of cannabis came from ONE STUDY, which has not been replicated (typically dozens are needed to form any sort of conclusion). One study with 18 rats who had synthetic thc extract injected straight into tumours. Not smoked, injected. Though a few rats did show improvement, half of the rats died before the study was completed. Those who tout cannabis as a panacea typically do so to justify their behaviour.
Like I said, it can relieve symptoms like pain and inflammation, and increase appetite, but it will weaken the immune system, which is not good for an already compromised system. Be sure to do as much unbiased scientific research as possible from reputable peer-reviewed medical journals before making an informed decision. ---------------------------------------------------
I am looking for help in finding out more information. If there are any studies or facts that you could provide, I would be very appreciative.
Thanks in advance.

Google Dr Tashkin, and his studies on lung, throat and neck cancer, for one. He was and still is the US govt's number one cannabis researcher AGAINST cannabis, and still had to honorably give his actual findings. Cannabis appears to work to protect our bodies from cancer. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/05/25/AR2006052501729.html"We hypothesized that there would be a positive association between marijuana use and lung cancer, and that the association would be more positive with heavier use," he said. "What we found instead was no association at all, and even a suggestion of some protective effect."
Federal health and drug enforcement officials have widely used Tashkin's previous work on marijuana to make the case that the drug is dangerous. Tashkin said that while he still believes marijuana is potentially harmful, its cancer-causing effects appear to be of less concern than previously thought.
Earlier work established that marijuana does contain cancer-causing chemicals as potentially harmful as those in tobacco, he said. However, marijuana also contains the chemical THC, which he said may kill aging cells and keep them from becoming cancerous.

Hey Clover, there are many many sites such as this, www,cancer.gov Here are a few highlights from the above site: Cannabinoids may cause antitumor effects by various mechanisms, including induction of cell death, inhibition of cell growth, and inhibition of tumor angiogenesis invasion and metastasis.[9-12] Cannabinoids appear to kill tumor cells but do not affect their nontransformed counterparts and may even protect them from cell death. These compounds have been shown to induce apoptosis in glioma cells in culture and induce regression of glioma tumors in mice and rats. Cannabinoids protect normal glial cells of astroglial and oligodendroglial lineages from apoptosis mediated by the CB1 receptor.[13]
The effects of delta-9-THC and a synthetic agonist of the CB2 receptor were investigated in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).[14] Both agents reduced the viability of hepatocellular carcinoma cells in vitro and demonstrated antitumor effects in hepatocellular carcinoma subcutaneous xenografts in nude mice. The investigations documented that the anti-HCC effects are mediated by way of the CB2 receptor. Similar to findings in glioma cells, the cannabinoids were shown to trigger cell death through stimulation of an endoplasmic reticulum stress pathway that activates autophagy and promotes apoptosis. Other investigations have confirmed that CB1 and CB2 receptors may be potential targets in non-small cell lung carcinoma [15] and breast cancer.[16]
An in vitro study of the effect of CBD on programmed cell death in breast cancer cell lines found that CBD induced programmed cell death, independent of the CB1, CB2, or vanilloid receptors. CBD inhibited the survival of both estrogen receptor–positive and estrogen receptor–negative breast cancer cell lines, inducing apoptosis in a concentration-dependent manner while having little effect on nontumorigenic, mammary cells.[17]Sadly, as with everything else on the web, there also exist a number of anti-cannabis pages as well. I've been doing a bit of research on medical uses of cannabis recently, and have come across perhaps one antagonistic site for every twenty positive ones. Please pass on my good wishes to your friend.

I have seen it work! a woman, mother-in-law of a close friend was diagnosed with melanoma of her right ear. it was so advanced that the only medical option was to remove most of the ear and canal which would have left her with a divit in the side of her head. this was confirmed by a 2nd opinion from another oncologist. my friend suggested using the hemp oil treatment from cannabis concentrate, apply it directly on the outside of the ear three times a day for 6 weeks. she did not start the chemo or radiation or take any other meds or change her diet. in 3 weeks it was reduced by 30%. in 6 weeks it was the size of a dime and at this time she went back to the dr to show him and he said "thats nice" do you want to start the chemo now? she said why its almost gone? he added but it could come back. she replied "well if it does, I'll grow the cure in my back yard thanks anyway" to this day it is completely clear and never did return and that was 2 years ago. on the positive side, using it won't hurt her, will help with chemo and nausea as well as allowing her to get the rest which is soooo important to healing from any health issue. if you think I was ready to accept this as "it will cure cancer", there are more studies today to back up the fact it does inhibit and kill "some types" of cancer cells. I was a paramedic for 27 yrs so I watched this very closely and I am convinced it works for skin cancer at the very least. good luck

Here is a link to a study from 1974 where scientists at the Medical College of Richmond Virginia successfully treated tumours of the heart, lung, brain, liver and kidney in test lab rats/mice using an alcohol extract of cannabinoids (mostly delta 8 and delta 9 tetrahydrocannabinol). In almost all cases the test lab rats/mice had their tumours reverse growth and in many cases the lab rats/mice given cancer and treated with cannabinoids actually outlive the control rats/mice whom were perfectly healthy. http://www.ukcia.org/research/AntineoplasticActivityOfCannabinoids/index.php There is also of course Rick Simpsons documentary "Run From The Cure" here is a link to the video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGjC4HReFL0 here is also a link to a video of Rick Simpson giving an almost 4 hour seminar in Croatia about the healing benefits of cannabis oil as a cancer cure, as well as a treatment for a plethora of other ailments. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jmg9uzI48cE&feature=plcp Here is a link to another more scientific documentary about cannabis as a cure for cancer as well, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hy66MUZP538 , here is a link (its two parts) to an interview with a Scientists who cured his terminal stage 3 prostate cancer with cannabis oil and later on more in part two he explains kind of the reasoning behind how it works, here is part 1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ym0BSdEIjJA&feature=plcp and here is part 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_7gy7Dyta0&feature=plcp , here is also a link to the channel from where all these videos came from, and i believe its the Official Rick Simpson youtube account, http://www.youtube.com/user/chrychek it has a ton of other videos that should prove informative. Also here is a link to the US patents on cannabinoids, http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&Sect2=HITOFF&d=PALL&p=1&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsrchnum.htm&r=1&f=G&l=50&s1=6630507.PN.&OS=PN/6630507&RS=PN/6630507
