just wondering if anyone can help identify this species of mushroom for me. i am thinking it is panaeolus subbalteatus, but would like to have other clarification.

Hard to say at first glance... it certainly could be in the panaeolus genus, is there dung nearby? Sort of looks like panaeolus campanulatus aka dung bells.

It also vaguely resembles psilocybe semilanceata aka liberty caps, can't properly see the stem though, and without a spore print (looking for dark purple-brown spores), couldn't rule it in or out for sure. Actually come to think of it, what's the scale of your photo? Compared to the vegetation and what size I expect those species of leaves to be, they look a little big for p. semilanceata. Edit: Oh, yeah, and unless you've had nights close to freezing recently, it won't be p. semilanceata.

I would take a spore print and post it on www.shroomery.org along with your picture. Im sure someone would help you out over there. Even then do some of your own research until you personally are confident that you know what they are. I say this as I wouldn't advise eating wild mushrooms that haven't been properly identified.
