Researchers trace Obama’s family back to first U.S. slave


Researchers at Ancestry.com say President Barack Obama is the 11th great-grandson of the first African man to be declared a slave in America, according to CBS News.

The findings were released Monday after researchers spent two years tracing the family tree of Obama’s late mother, Ann Dunham, who was born Stanley Ann Dunham in Kansas in 1942. Dunham’s roots can be traced to a family, the Bunches, descended from a Virginia slave named John Punch. Dunham died in 1995. Obama’s father, Barack Hussein Obama, was born in Kenya.

In 1640, Punch, who had escaped to Virginia from Maryland, was caught and sentenced to a lifetime of servitude. Researchers say the discrepancy in names is common – record-keepers of the era wrote names down according to how they sounded – but that DNA testing of the Bunch family led them to make the connection.

“We sort of stumbled across it,” lead researcher Anastasia Harman told The New York Times. “We were just doing general research into the president’s family tree, and as we started digging back in time, we realized that the Bunch family were African-American.”

The Bunch family would come to span seven generations across a group of states including Virginia, Tennessee, Arkansas and Kansas.

Obama’s family background has been a point of political contention during his presidency: earlier this year, reality TV show host Donald Trump was one of several Republican figures insisting the president was actually born in Kenya, an allegation a slight majority of Republican voters still seem to buy, even after he released the long-form birth certificate proving he was born in Hawaii.

The findings come just over a month after DNA testing also revealed that the president’s wife, Michelle Obama, is related to members of several white families, including some who fought for the South during the Civil War.

Obama being born in Kenya is such a lame argument, IMHO.

First off, IF there were even a shred of truth here the folks leading the so-called "birthers" movement had enough resources to prove that.

Second, what's so freakin' special about Obama that the dems needed HIM to be their candidate - to the point where they'd jeopardize their shot at the executive office spot over supporting a supposed foreigner?

Third, focusing on this sorta suggests there aren't REAL issues with Obama's performance.

To me, it just makes all legitimate arguments/concerns seem silly because the smokescreen focusing on the birth certificate has created has been ridiculous. In other words it APPEARS as if there is nothing else wrong with the guy's politics.

Same deal as focusing on Romney's tax returns IMHO.
I don't need to see Mitt's tax returns to know he sucks plenty.
If/when he produces additional returns, there will be those who say THOSE were faked, too.

I don't need to see Romney's taxes to KNOW he took advantage of everything any other person in his tax bracket would do to shelter his investment income (he straight up admitted it to begin with... why do we need "proof?")

I also don't need to see 100 different copies of Obama's birth certificate to KNOW the Dems could have put up any other puppet they wanted to be the face of the party, and would have if the question of Obama's citizenship had any possible basis in fact.

Since we've focused on BS issues like BC's and 1040's both dudes look like they've been picked-on and are deserving of sympathy.

Why are these smokescreens more important or interesting to the general public than platforms or service records?

It always blows my mind that the people that talked the most about how evil the Clintons were are the same folks saying Obama was born in Kenya but never bringing up why if that was true, the Clintons didn't use it. That said what Obama has done on M/M is enough reason for me to vote against him.[ hell he could have pardon Marc] there are other reasons but that's enough. Romney, so many reasons I can't list them.

Aside from the memo, I don't know of any time that Obama said he would be for mj legalization. So, it is no surprise to me that he would have done anything to advance the cause.
