Do what Doob said about flushing and what not. Here is a pretty good link for RO machines.

I bow to your assessment smile One of my many bad habits is to think that my experiences are the same everywhere,e.g. I've always had decent tap water, never causing any discernible problems. I really have to stop doing that! blush

So, stupid question time: how many people have 'salty' water, that is a high ppm from the tap? What sorts of numbers (ppms) are we talking about here ?

Thanks for fixing my mistakes Nutty. Apologies to RD.

Doobz, bro no apologies necessary. I'm sure all in all the water in Canada is much better than most of the US water. We been busy fuckin' it up now for years. Mine is 300-350 ppm depending a lil bit on the time of year. And we are considered to have pretty good water here in the mid west plains. And I misspoke saying salts. Shoulda said minerals I think. Impurities blah, blah. And in all honesty I proolly don't know shit and shouldn't have even weighed in. I have never gorwn anything but hydro and aero. And have NEVER tried a grow with out using RO, so I have no idea about tap. Just did a ton of reading before I started and the consensus seemed to be. Use RO water or get/have the water tested. I was uncertain on what I'd say if I was asked why I needed a test or water test results. Soooo I just bought an RO machine.

When I lived in Las Vegas NV, the tap water was 650 ppm and 8.2 ph, horrid water. In AZ it was even worse. 98% of what I do is hydro.

Where I live now it is great, 23 ppm and ph is 7.5 but I still use my r/o as then it is 0.

People in these forums are from all around the world and water conditions vary widely. Therefore, I always reccomend R/O water unles one has tested and knows what they are dealing with.

Big Cities and deserts are the worst.

Hmmm.... I've always thought your water was pretty much the same as ours. The rationale for my earlier statements was based on never having experienced 'bad' water, taste or grow-wise.

No problem with the salts/minerals thing Nutty, it was clear to me what you meant.

A cheap way to have your water tested is to try growing with it.
