Grandma's pot cookies land California toddler in hospital

By msnbc.com staff and wire reports

A three-year-old California boy was rushed to the hospital over the weekend after apparently eating marijuana-laced cookies.

The family believes the boy got into his grandmother’s stash of chocolate-chip pot cookies, tucked away in a garage refrigerator, one day earlier.

The family called police around 10:30 a.m. the next day when the toddler would not wake up after a long night’s sleep, and they realized he may have eaten the cookies, according to a press release from the Murrieta Police Department.

The boy’s grandmother, who had been diagnosed with cancer, had a doctor’s recommendation for medical marijuana to treat her pain and help her sleep, Sgt. Phil Gomez told The Press-Enterprise newspaper.

The boy’s aunt was babysitting him and his younger sibling Friday while the father was away, Gomez said. When the father returned that afternoon, he noticed crumbs on the garage floor and assumed the child’s grandmother had been into the cookies, the Press-Enterprise reported.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The boy fell asleep around 5 p.m., Gomez said. The family didn’t become concerned until the next morning, however, when they couldn’t wake him up.

At that point, Gomez said, the father mentioned noticing the crumbs and decided to call police.

The boy was admitted to a local hospital for observation and later released.

It is not known how much the boy ate, but the child’s grandmother said a silver-dollar-size bite had been enough to make her sleep, the Press-Enterprise reported.

“It’s unfortunate that they didn’t take better steps to keep those cookies out of reach of the child,” Gomez said. “[The grandmother] claims she’s not going to make them ever again.”

Police have not released the names of the family members and said the investigation is ongoing. No arrests have been made.

Investigators are awaiting the results of a toxicology test. If traces of marijuana are found in the boy’s system, Gomez said, family members could potentially face a child endangerment charge.

Gah. This frustrates me on more than one level.

Yes. Her meds should have been better secured. But a 3-year-old also needs constant supervision, you can't just park them in front of a TV and walk away (or whatever happened there).

My eldest nephew and my brother (his father) were visiting unannounced one day, I didn't have time to child-safe my place. My brother knew this, but he also has a smartphone addiction, so he's sitting on the couch checking Failbook or whatever, and I'm on the toilet. His son started messing with my stuff in the kitchen, found my meds in a drawer, and ate one of the brightest-coloured ones. I come out of the washroom and see him reaching for a second pill, I nearly had a heart attack, his father, oblivious.

I check to see what's missing from the pill boxes, he ate one of my anti-triglyceride pills, relatively non-toxic. If he'd chosen the antidepressant or antipsychotic I shudder to think what he would have experienced, I'm on a heavy dose of each which even an adult needs to slowly adjust to.

So now back to the original post, I'm fairly certain someone in that household is going to court, which wouldn't really make sense... police weren't called for my incident... but maybe they would have if it had been a pot cookie and not something I had a prescription for.

They are going to face all this because they lost it and forgot weed has no LD/50.

Actually, it does have an LD50, for cows at least. Several decades ago the one and only death solely attributable to marijuana occurred in Brazil, when a cow ate 20 pounds of bud. I guess that would be about a 2-3 pounds for a human, unless we have a higher tolerance for it than cows.

Okay, so maybe inapplicable. blah

I'm just relieved it was her Marijuana and not her legal narcotics. And also relieved it didn't say, "toddler unconscious after eating grandma's MUFFIN" laugh

I like how they called the COPS, instead of taking him straight to the ER.

I realize the police would have been notified by the hospital staff anyhow, but totally don't get why LEO is one's first thought in a MEDICAL emergency.

Damn - we're sooooooooooo conditioned frown

Nice to see some news about idiots from the old 'hood, too. Don't supervise the kid while he wanders into the freakin' GARAGE; not like that's where you store spare fuel cans, chemical fertilizers or anti-freeze... it's okay he's like THREE, no way those hacksaws or power tools pose any danger - way to go Inland Empire!

That was my first thought Weedy, those idiots placed their paranoia of the law over the health of their child...shows you where their priorities are. eek The kid's parents are also to blame - if they were doing their jobs properly, we wouldn't be hearing this story.

As OC mentioned, thank goodness it was cannabis and not something toxic and deadly like..oh, lemesee....opiates.

On the other hand, this is just nature's way of thinning the herd.

Good one on the muffin OC. Yes I think what we need is most folks to realise that 1 this was the parents fault for not watch and/or teaching[ stay out of other peoples stuff, ask first] 2 Thank God it was weed. I live in Okieland no M/M and they give me Hydrocodone like it's M & M's. Bad for me but deadly in large doses for a kid.
