So should I only keep it heated for 30 mins, then off for 10mins, then on for 30 mins again like was mentioned here, or, should I simmer it in the double boiler for 4-6 hours or more?

I'm just reading alot of different techniques with varying times.

Thanks!

I've used a crock pot with 3/4 water, on high, overnight.

That's the other thing I wonder about, whether to boil the cannabis in water and butter and then cool the finished solution in the fridge, and pull the floating hard butter of the top once cooled, or, simply place the cannabis and butter (with no water) in a double boiler like I have been and not mix it with water at all.

What is the preferred method?

I wonder about losing some THC in the water that gets discarded if you do the water/butter mix method, and I also wonder if anything is lost by removing the solids via cheesecloth at the end of the process.

Any thoughts on this?
Thanks!

what i do, take a ladle to remove the oil from the top, strain through cheesecloth in a strainer, then take that into the fridge.

Remove green butter, and you can always clarify that later. The answer to that is in this forum.

Hey buddy.

You may not be feeling much when you eat your butter because it seems to me like you're using a lot of butter for the amount of cannabis you've got.

Try using enough butter to barely coat the weed, and no more. You'll end up with a more potent product.

You mention you're using a double boiler? When I think double boiler I think:

The only concern with this picture is that if the bowl sits too low inside the pot, so the bowl is resting on the rim of the pot all the way around, allowing no steam to escape; pressure will build up under the bowl. As pressure builds up, so temperature rises. Always keep enough water inside the boiling pot to keep the bowl floating freely, and not resting on the rim of the pot.

The genius of the double-boiler is that steam is allowed to escape around the outside of the bowl. Boiling water will never rise above ~220 degrees F. Therefore, your butter will never be heated above that temperature. The double boiler keeps your weed from vaporizing as long as there is enough water in the pot below to keep the bowl floating.

This is exactly what I do. Weed and butter inside the bowl on top, and plenty of boiling water inside the pot below. Using a round bowl on top of the pot provides the best possible shape to encorporate as much weed as possible into the smallest amount of butter.

Try to use as little butter as possible, no matter how much weed you use. Also, remember that this works equally well with any fatty oil. Olive oil, cocoanut oil, veg oil, even duck fat if you want to enjoy a lovely cannabis confit.

I find this ratio works excellently:

1oz cannabis / 1 cup butter

Just so we're clear, 1 cup of butter is 1/2 a pound.

If you're using the small sticks:

Each small stick is 1/2 a cup.

With ~28 grams in an oz of weed, and you using 4 grams...

For 4 grams, I would recommend 2.5 Tablespoons of butter.

I like to start my butter in the double boiler, clean the kitchen and make dinner. I'll stop to add more water to the boiling pot occasionally, but otherwise I ignore it completely. After about three hours, I pour the weed/butter mixture into a "French Press" coffee maker, and press it down, separating the butter.

You can use cheese cloth, coffee filters, or even a fine-mesh chinois strainer to separate bud from butter. Whatever you want.

One more time, my recipe:

~28g cannabis
1 cup (1/2 a pound) of butter

Steep in double boiler for 3 hours.

Strain.

Eat.

Get high.

With this concentration, 1 Tablespoon of infused butter is enough to mess me up righteously for 10 hours or so. I find excellent pain relief benefits with this method/concentration. I like to just spread it on some toast.

One last consideration:

When you eat the weed food is important as well. Cannabinoids are most easily absorbed in your bile. Your pancreas excretes bile as you swallow food to help digest it before it reaches the stomach. However, you can only produce so much bile in a given time period.

So. If you just ate a huge meal, and you want to follow it up with some weed toast... Your pancreas will probably be producing less bile after all that food you just ate. Therefore you will get less of an effect from the food since your body cannot digest it properly.

What I'm saying here is that you should enjoy some toast first thing in the morning. You'll have a great day.

I hope this was helpful! Good luck!

Thanks for that info, that was really helpful.

It's funny, I seen my doctor yesterday, and informed him that simply "eating" the cannabis as he had advised me without heating it first to a certain temp would not yield any therapeutic results, at least not get the most potential out of it, and he was completely confused about that.

All he knew was that the health Canada guidelines said to consume it orally if it was not going to be smoked..lol.

Additionally, I informed him of the legality issues of making extracts, oils, edibles or "products" here in NS since the recent supreme court ruling only seems to effect BC, and Health Canada has a year to respond to the supreme courts ruling before even changing any of the laws.

Again, he had no idea of any legal issues of making edibles, oils, butters ect.

In essence, my doctor advised me to break the law, although he also agrees that nobody is going to bug me about it if I did make butter in order to properly consume and administer oral doses of my LEGAL cannabis.

Too funny.
