For simplicity and flavor, I like to dry ice extract and then press the kief into pucks (or leave loose to dust a bowl). For preference (and again flavor - not as much as kief though), I enjoy the 'power' of concentrates via BHO (butane hash oil) that really isn't an oil consistency, but rather a sticky hard product. Yet with it comes some safety responsibility as to not blow yourself up (however, you have lab experience and can respect the probabilities of what CAN go wrong most likely will if your an idiot ) I Do make QWISO (quick wash ISO), when the humidity levels are low (aka: winter), or if I want to do it inside (well vented of course), but as mentioned.... 'I prefer' the above mentioned for flavour.

dry material is good for hash oil and dry sift. the fresh material is prime for bubble.
imo whenever doing an extraction or separation, minimal agitation is the key. let what wants to fall off, fall off, and then re run the material using a bit more agitation.
an example of this would be to use the dry material for dry sift... ok the material is placed on the screen, tap the sides or shake it 10-15 seconds, collect what has fallen and put it in a pile somewhere outside the collection tray & label #1. re run the same material by leaving it on the screen, shaking it for 10-15 seconds again, then collect, label #2, & repeat. by pulling out each one, you will notice that the colors get greener and greener the higher the number. this is especially important with the new dry ice method that is getting popular today. with the dry ice the material gets brittle quickly and the green flakes of plant matter start falling threw with resin glads of the same size. you can mix these back together once you have found which ones you would rather remove from the good stash.
another example of "letting it fall if it's going to fall" is when i grind my buds with a grinder, i only place the bud on the screen when it comes out of the grinder. treat the screen like a magazine or rolling tray and not extraction equipment. usually the best of the best falls threw and makes melty sift.
an example with bubble hash, first mix with a spoon by hand, collect your resins.... then beat the hell out of the material with a drill after all the highest quality has already been collected out of it.
with butane and alcohol, basically you want your material to have a minimum exposure to the solvents because of their harsh stripping nature. the wax membrane on the outside of the trichomes, melts extremely quick once exposed to solvents and therefor washes only require 15-30 seconds to get a nice clean extract before you start pulling chlorophyll as well. With butane, you don't really have a choice of how long it makes contact with the bud, with alcohol you can easily over soak it.
hope this little overview was somewhat helpful.

Thanks very much for the responses guys. I'm not overly keen to try butane, if only due to the cost - I've worked in a pathology lab, surrounded by xylene, formaldehyde, and assorted alcohols and other solvents, so safety is not really my first concern. Been making finger hash only to date, from both kief and grinder collections. TheNewGuy: is it worth the effort of first sifting pounds of cuttings, followed by a second method to remove whatever has not fallen off ? Smokum: how does dry ice compare to blender hash ? OG: does QWISO work well on both dry and fresh material ? Thanks for reading.
