Floyd for the win. Zep was great, but Floyd pushed limits with new technology of the time and made something unique. A lot of Zep songs were rip offs of old blues tunes, but they did make them their own. Here's my favorite Floyd song, it's like putting a mushroom trip into musical notation.
Floyd for the win also because someone had to have the guts to tell the truth about the lifestyle of the over indulgent hedonistic privileged class of the time and the lower echelons who tried to keep pace with them. For me, "The Wall", Became a final confirmation of something I already fully comprehended subconsciously; people who do a lot of drugs build walls of separation between the straights(squares) and the hipsters. People also do a lot of drugs to escape the pain of life; even though it never ever seems to work very well. At the very least, I am so damn glad that I missed out on waiting in line for a maintenance dose of Methadone, I could just shit myself. Only dopes brag about selling a lot of dope.

Every Zeppelin song sounded like it was a different band playing. They explored different areas of music because they were all musically trained, a super-band of sorts for the time.
Floyd is next best, because they have a singular identifiable "Pink Floyd" sound which transcends all of their songs and albums.
Both are excellent for sure, definitely awesome in different ways, but to me Zeppelin is a hair higher because of their breadth of musical ability. It's rare nowadays to see a band do 1/10 of what Zeppelin pulled off in their heyday.
Floyd didn't really need to explore other types of music since they found their calling and perfected it (even though I believe they did a lot of experimenting!) while Zeppelin kept experimenting.
If you already have the best forget the rest.

one thing about pink floyd that i don't like is the depressed overtone in their music.
lyrically and musically pink floyd is fantastic. i hear their stage shows are something to see. but after a while, i get tired of the depression. i don't get that from zeppelin's music.

I have no idea what you`re trying to convey by using ,"Depression", To describe Pink Floyd`s music. The facts of life are that life is a series of ups and downs and Floyd brought that reality to the forefront in their creative works even as their audience grew up with them as they created music which had themes which expressed an entire range of expressions about conflict, greed, the passage of time, death, and insanity; stuff that pisses people off and elicits strong emotional response while it also invites them to reconcile themselves to the reality of finding a way to make peace with their inner torment. All of the shit that comes with being superstars ,hitting the top and realizing that when you hit the top you have no place to go was how Pink once described what happened to the band. Depression? That`s a bored child`s response to their inability to come to grips with melancholy. The quiet desperation of Pink Floyd`s artistic genre has only amounted to 200 million albums sold worldwide. What I remember best about the 70`s was that it ushered in an era where so many (most) of the free love peace joy and hapiness turned into bitter rivalries on the most ridiculous stuff like,"My weed`s better than yours", then everyone soon realized that on the outer appearance, everything was great, but inside most people knew that something was brewing, and it was anything but good. LedZep lost one band member and they were toast. Pink Floyd survived in a world of shit and I seriously doubt if their music, message and legay will disappear anytime soon. "Look, mummy, up in the sky! It's an aeroplane!" ............ now picture a baby girl in South Sudan saying those words to her mother as the bombs rain down on their village. Yeah, anyone who's heard Floyd's Comfortably Numb knows what it means when someone says it has a depressing overtone. It does seem that they take on the darker side of human emotions. Not many of their songs have an uplifting effect. Then again, it's not meant to...their songs are supposed to be caught up in the negative side of things, to explore it and make sense out of it.
The dark side of the human mind has its uses, and it requires strength of mind to appreciate this and not get too caught up in your own emotional response to the music.
Dream Theater beats both of these bands out of the water as far as a full eclipse of every side of the human psyche AND musical ability. Of course, Zep gets a bit closer than Floyd to this.
