Maher: Conservatism is not an ideology, ‘It’s just about being a dick’


On this week’s edition of “Real Time with Bill Maher,” host Bill Maher dedicated the last segment of his “New Rules” feature to conservatives’ penchant for finding spokesmen among the pre-shaving set. This week internet radio sensation Caiden Cowger made a splash for his recorded rant about LGBT teens in his area.

Maher coined a New Rule to mark the occasion, saying to conservatives, “If a 14-year-old can deliver your message, it’s not because he’s gifted. It’s because intellectually, you’re a child.”

Watching Cowger deliver his spiel is a little eerie, from the way he cocks his head at the ends of phrases and shapes his points in the air with his hands, “It’s like one of those time travel movies where Rush Limbaugh goes back in time to when he only needed one Oxycontin to get high.”

GOP says Air Force ‘hostile to religion’

More than 60 Republican lawmakers have signed a letter to U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta accusing the U.S. Air Force of being “hostile to religion,” according to Fox News.

The letter, drafted by Reps. Todd Akin (R-MO), Diane Black (R-TN) and Randy Forbes (R-VA), calls on Panetta to investigate a series of cases where the Air Force “succumbed” to pressure from outside groups, such as the removal of a paragraph from a Squadron Officer School training document saying, “if you attend chapel regularly, both officers and Airmen are likely to follow this example. If you are morally lax in your personal life, a general moral indifference within the command can be expected.”

The document was taken out following a complaint by the Military Religious Freedom Foundation that the line “creates the inescapable impression that regular church attendance is a requirement for commissioned Air Force officers in order to demonstrate positive morals to subordinates.” The foundation said it violates the constitutional ban on religious tests for U.S. office holders.

Supreme Court guts most of Arizona’s anti-immigration law


The United States Supreme Court on Monday struck down most of Arizona’s controversial SB 1070 immigration law, but upheld that police could be required to inquire about immigration status when they stop suspects.

“With three out of the four provisions being struck down, the ruling shows that the Obama administration was right to challenge this law, which was not just ill-advised but also unconstitutional,” Reid said in a statement.

“Looking ahead to the immigration debate, it is disturbing that Mitt Romney called the unconstitutional Arizona law a ‘model’ for immigration reform. Laws that legalize discrimination are not compatible with our nation’s ideals and traditions of equal rights, and the idea that such an unconstitutional law should serve as a ‘model’ for national reform is far outside the American mainstream.”
