"It's an indication of what's to come for other public service workers who are unionized," said Mulcair. "But it's also a signal from the Conservatives to all employers -- in a union setting or otherwise -- that it's an open bar. They can start going after the acquired rights of their workers."

“People didn’t know that these plans were in place of course until after the government was elected, so I find that whole thing rather distasteful,” said Gary Corbett, President of the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada. “People knew what was going to happen, but they saved announcements until after the election.”

The loss of federal funding for Toronto’s SummerWorks theatre and music festival, which fell under sharp criticism last year from the Stephen Harper government, could be felt throughout Canada’s theatre community, theatre professionals say.

don't bother stimulating the economy by creating new jobs; don't bother indulging the masses with a bit of culture. in 4 years we wont't recognize this country.

Gerry Deveau, national director for the Ontario region of the CUPW, said Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms contains the right to belong to a union and Canada's labour code protects the right to collective bargaining. It's on those grounds, the union wants to file a legal challenge, he said.

i can not imagine what prompted Labour Minister Lisa Raitt to state part of the blame of the tenuous state of our recovering economy relies upon our postal service! Further there's a 2007 charter challenge upheld for health care workers who were awarded victory for collective bargaining.

The union representing engineers and other professionals at AECL said the deal will chop about 40 per cent of the division’s staff, most working at AECL’s Sheridan Park labs and offices in Mississauga.

7.5 million eligible voters who did not cast a ballot in the May 2 election said they “were not interested in voting,” which included feeling their vote would not have had an impact on the final results.

B.C. NDP MP Peter Julian says the Harper crowd is playing "partisan games with procurement and regional job creation, which is unfortunate." He says the Conservatives have set up "a competition that unnecessarily pitted region against region."

there's enough ship building work for all 4 provinces to share and with high paying jobs in short supply it seems like a good idea to spread it around instead of concentrating on 2 of 4 provinces.

Callers to the census hotline are now greeted by a recorded message that urges people to ignore reminders if they have already completed the census. But the message says interviewers are still going door-to-door to ensure everyone has completed the census. The law requires all households to complete the census.

remember Captain Blah said nobody's gonna go to jail for not filling out the census, but we'll hound the shit out of you with empty threats. they came to my door twice in two days, the second visit I greeted them with a big fuck you, get lost.

Labour laws generally require employers to give two weeks' notice of a layoff and a minimum of four per cent of salary earned in the last year, generally considered vacation pay.

The accusations of improper lobbying were the most recent in a string of controversies surrounding Jaffer, who pleaded guilty to a careless driving charge related to a 2009 incident and was fined $500. He was charged initially with cocaine possession and drunk driving, but the Crown later withdrew those charges.
