a fun topic.

i had a discussion with a friend. we talked about which band we thought was "better", led zeppelin or pink floyd. both of us are zeppelin fans but we could easily see how one could argue pink floyd's place in rock n roll. we had a lot of fun "debating" this topic and now i want to share the fun with you all.

"better" is a loose term to interpret as you wish. but while we're at it why stop at zeppelin & floyd....

tommy james vs. steve miller

megadeth vs. metallica

tom petty vs. neil young

the great and powerful cthulu vs. the kracken

so what do you all think? zep or floyd?

i am a zeppelin fan gotta go with them. yeah, they "zeppelinized" some old blues songs but they did it with style. smile

petty vs young was a tough one for me. i dig both but went with neil young. his work with CSN&Y and his solo stuff is just to good to ignore.

tommy james vs steve miller was tough. i went with tommy james on the strength of "draggin the line" and "crimson and clover".

cthulu! this was a no brainer. cthulu drives his victims insane before devouring their souls. i mean how fucking cool is that? smile

Floyd over Zeppelin but love both.

It's always said that Zeppelin are the fathers of heavy metal, they are more blues. The true fathers of heavy metal I think was Black Sabbath.

Not much into the other stuff mentioned, but I like every song Tom Petty does, but Neil Young is great too so a tie for me on that one.

Which leads me to a new VERSUS

Black Sabbath or Ozzy with Randy Rhoads?

It's a much harder choice than Floyd or Zep. I gotta say Randy's got Tony Iommi beat in the technicality department, but Tony was missing the tips of two fingers for fucks sake. Black Sabbath pretty much defined the sound of 'heavy metal'.

the time those two worked together was magical. awesome music. i really liked the guitar work on the diary of a madman album. classic stuff.

I have both those LP's. As in vynl. "The Wizard" is about as bluesy as Sabbath gets, but it's still heavy metal.
