Joe Arpaio Wants Your Papers, Will Not Accept Them

Man, wingnuts in Arizona really are obsessed with people of color and having your “papers”. Despite the fact that it makes you an automatic laughingstock to do this, Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County in Arizona made a big to-do over his “investigation” of the President’s birth certificate. I’m sure you’ll all be surprised to discover that Arpaio has determined that Obama’s birth certificate doesn’t measure up to his standards of authenticity, because he looked closely and frankly, he doesn’t want it to be real, though there’s some gobbledy-gook about how the numeric codes aren’t filled out to their satisfaction. Since there is literally no birth certificate pristine enough to be filled out to their satisfaction, however, the exact complaints aren’t particularly relevant.

This would all seem very funny, except that Arpaio’s agency has all these fancy new powers to demand citizenship papers from random people the officers deem the wrong shade to walking around like they’re all free and shit. The main concern previously was that they’d spend a bunch of time arresting people who are here legally but don’t happen to carry all their paperwork on them when they run down to the grocery store to buy milk. Now I have to point out that the leadership has set an example wherein no matter how rock solid and swiftly presented a person of color’s papers are, the papers can be deemed “fraudulent” as long as you come up with a horseshitty-sounding enough complaint about the kerning or whatever. Sure, your own papers could never measure up to the standards, but your skin color means they never will have to. Win-win, if you think that phrase means “I get to fuck with you and don’t get fucked with myself, so two wins for me!”

Lest you think I’m exaggerating, it’s important to remember that the Southwestern states have previously been involved in a “papers please” crackdown named, and I’m not joking, Operation Wetback. It was a program under President Eisenhower where the government just did outrageous sweeps of Mexican-American communities, deporting people by the thousands, often without really paying any attention to their paperwork status. In other words, it was a human rights nightmare on the level that I imagine Arpaio still beats off to it every night: overcrowded cells, stuffing people into trucks, harassing people based on skin color. Seven people even died when one overcrowded boat got unruly and people fell off and drowned to death. Unsurprisingly, many natural-born citizens were also deported, because the “papers, please” crowd only pretends to be interested in strictly following the law.

At this point in the post, I suppose I should be writing a nice little conclusion to wrap all this up, but I think we all know what the point is: This obsession with paperwork is a fig leaf for racists to express their belief in white supremacy. Not much more to add to that, except that anyone who denies it will be used as an example by future historians of idiocy in service of ideology, much like the phrase “separate but equal” is treated now.

Bachmann: Rep. Ellison has ‘long record’ with Muslim Brotherhood

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) on Thursday responded to criticism over her attacks on Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s deputy chief of staff, Huma Abedin, by claiming that Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) also had a “long record” of association with radical Islamists in the Muslim Brotherhood.

Last week, the St. Cloud Times reported that Bachmann and four other Republicans sent a letter to inspectors general in the State, Homeland Security, Defense and Justice departments calling on them to investigate “potential Muslim Brotherhood infiltration” of the Obama administration by Abedin, an aide to Secretary Clinton and wife of former Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY). Their accusations were based on a report by Frank Gaffney’s neoconservative Center for Security Policy.

On Wednesday, Ellison, who is Muslim, told the Star Tribune that this “is one of those moments when you can’t stay silent,” adding that the attacks were “McCarthyism at its worst.”

Republicans like House Speaker John Boehner, Arizona Sen. John McCain, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and former Bachmann campaign manager Ed Rollins also condemned the anti-Muslim accusations.

Speaking to conservative radio host Glenn Beck on Thursday, Bachmann declined to respond to her Republican critics, but attempted to smear Ellison by associating him with Islamic radicals.

“So when you wrote this letter, then Keith Ellison comes out,” Beck told Bachmann. “Keith Ellison is — he has a record of being the Mafia hitman.”

“Well, [Ellison] has a long record of being associated with CAIR and with the Muslim Brotherhood,” Bachmann agreed. “[S]o he came out and essentially wanted to shut down the inspectors general from even looking into any of the questions that we were asking. So he wanted to shut it down. In response I wrote another letter back to Keith Ellison, a 16-page letter which I would encourage all of your listeners to go and read this letter. It’s what I call a bulletproof letter.”

“And so then now what’s happened is the attack machine has been turned on myself and the other members of congress who have been asking the questions, that somehow we’re the Muslim haters, we’re the witch-hunters, we’re the new Joe McCarthyites because we’re asking these questions,” she insisted.

Later on Thursday, Ellison told CNN’s Anderson Cooper that Bachmann’s charges were “ridiculous.”

“That’s not true,” the Minnesota congressman explained. “I don’t have any Muslim Brotherhood connections that she’s talking about.”

“I’m absolutely not trying to shut down their investigation. What I’m trying to do is raise a concern about unfounded allegations of disloyalty, specifically with regard to Huma Abedin and a few other people who she mentioned.”

Ellison continued: “It’s about marginalizing and alienating a group of Americans who she does not view as all-American enough.”

Gohmert and Napolitano clash over alleged Muslim infiltration

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) on Thursday suggested that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security had been infiltrated by the Muslim Brotherhood.

At a House Judiciary Committee hearing, Gohmert questioned DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano about Mohamed Elibiary, a Muslim appointed to the Homeland Security Advisory Council in 2010. Conservative publications have accused Elibiary of leaking sensitive intelligence documents to the media.

Napolitano told Gohmert that the allegations were “false, misleading and objectionable.”

“First of all, we have several people on the Homeland Security Advisory Committee who are Muslim,” she added. “They’ve been helping law enforcement for a long time. Mr. Elibiary himself was recognized by the FBI.”

Gohmert then asked if Napolitano was bothered by the fact that Elibiary “accessed information.”

“He accessed some information,” she replied. “What bothers me, quite frankly, are the allegations that are made against anyone who happens to be Muslim.”

Last week, Gohmert and Reps. Michele Bachmann (R-MN), Trent Franks (R-AZ), Thomas Rooney (R-FL), and Lynn Westmoreland (R-GA) sent a letter to inspectors general in the State, Homeland Security, Defense and Justice departments calling on them to investigate “potential Muslim Brotherhood infiltration” of the Obama administration by Huma Abedin, an aide to Secretary Clinton and wife of former Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY). The Republican lawmakers have been widely condemned for their “specious and degrading attacks.”

O’Reilly: Obama wants to ‘restrain capitalism’ because of slavery ‘grievances’

Fox News opinion host Bill O’Reilly says that President Barack Obama’s misguided disdain for capitalism is a reaction to “historical grievances” about slavery.

During his Thursday “Talking Points” segment, O’Reilly said that footage of president’s comments about business, which critics say were deceptively edited by both Fox News and Mitt Romney’s campaign, proved that “the real Barack Obama has finally stood up.”

“What the president wants to do is restrain capitalism through taxation,” the Fox News host explained. “If you score big, he wants a big piece of the action so he can give what you get to other people.”

“Now I could be wrong about this, but I think Mr. Obama allows historical grievances — things like slavery, bad treatment for Native Americans and U.S. exploitation of Third World countries — to shape his economic thinking,” O’Reilly continued. “Rather than seeing the U.S.A. as basically noble, he gives the bad things about America far too much weight, leading to his desire to redistribute wealth, thereby correcting historical grievance.”

“Mr. Obama is not a communist, he’s not a socialist,” he conclued. “He’s a social justice anti-capitalist. That’s what he is.”

Romney’s promise to put porn filters on every computer

MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell on Thursday called out presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney over his promise to put a “filter to block pornography” on every new computer in the U.S.

“Mitt Romney talks about freedom a lot these days,” but there is “one economic freedom that he wants to take away,” according to O’Donnell. “That’s right. Mitt Romney has flip flopped on everything including freedom.”

As late as 2007, Romney had vowed to implement a policy that would restrict the freedom to browse the Internet.

“I want to make sure that every new computer sold in this country after I’m president has installed on it a filter to block all pornography, and that parents can click that filter to make sure their kids don’t see that kind of stuff coming in on their computer,” Romney said at an event in Ottumwa, Iowa.

Earlier this week, Morality in Media president Patrick Trueman, who was an anti-pornography prosecutor in President Ronald Reagan’s Justice Department, told The Daily Caller that Romney’s campaign had assured him that the candidate would “vigorously” crackdown on the porn industry.

“Even though Romney has profited from pornography through his investments — including through his hotel investments where pay-per-view porn is a big profit center — Mitt says he wants to limit your freedom,” O’Donnell noted on Thursday. “He wants to limit some Americans’ freedom to search for porn.”

“The one business that Mitt Romney claims the most pride in is Staples,” the MSNBC host continued. “Now, I don’t have in front of me exactly how computers Staples has sold, but it’s like millions. And Romney was in a position to put a porn filter button on every computer that Staples sold — every single one — and he didn’t do it.”

“Maybe this is just another empty Romney promise, porn filters on every computer in America. Still, that that kind of talk is pretty scary.”

After conservatives blasted Romney in 2007 for doing nothing to stop Marriott from making millions on porn while he was chairman of the board’s audit committee, the hotel chain finally banned porn in their hotel rooms early last year as the Republican primary race was heating up.

Top tea partier demands Obama prove he doesn’t smoke crack and have gay sex

The president of Tea Party Nation declared on Thursday that if Mitt Romney is to release his tax returns, President Barack Obama should release medical records to prove he’s not a drug addict who smoked crack and had gay sex with a lifelong con-man.

Judson Phillips, whose for-profit group is better known to Tennessee as the “Tea Party Nation Corporation,” explained in an essay that also went out in a mass email to his followers that the American people must know whether the president had secret financial support in college due to his status as a “foreign student” — and dredged up a long-disproved story of Obama’s alleged encounter smoking crack and having sex with a gay prostitute.

“A man named Larry Sinclair claims that in 1999 he and Barack Obama had sex and then smoked crack cocaine,” Phillips wrote. “This is 1999, nine years before Obama would run for President. Crack cocaine is very addictive. It is very destructive. Addiction specialist will tell you that a crack addiction is very tough to break.”

He added: “Is Obama an addict? Was he an addict in the past? These are all legitimate questions to ask about a man who has his hands on the nuclear trigger. Why is Obama hiding these records and why isn’t the drive by media asking these questions. Why aren’t Republicans demanding the answers to these questions, instead of telling Mitt Romney he needs to play into Obama’s hands by releasing more tax returns?”

Otherwise, Phillips explained, Americans will never really know if Obama used cocaine and had gay sex with Larry Sinclair, a lifelong con-man who’s made wild allegations against the president and even published a book about the lewd tale. He told The National Press Club in 2008 that Obama is actually gay, but Sinclair’s claims were widely disregarded due to his 26-year-criminal history. Sinclair’s arrest on forgery charges, which immediately followed his big press conference, didn’t help much either.

Nevertheless, conservative conspiracy tabloids like World Net Daily have continued to cheerlead the story as if it has some stroke of growing legitimacy, and Sinclair enjoyed a resurgence of sorts after the president said he supports marriage equality. He’s since predicted that President Obama will “come out of the closet” if he’s reelected.

While Phillips’ statements are alarming, he’s no stranger to controversy. He said in November 2010 that it “makes a lot of sense” to restrict voting rights to just property owners. He again landed in headlines in August 2011, after explaining that American liberals have “killed a billion people” in the last century — a remark that came just a day after Phillips compared Wisconsin union workers to Nazi stormtroopers who wore “brown shirts.”

CNN: Cantor’s office wrote loophole into insider trading bill

CNN is reporting that House Majority Leader Eric Cantor’s (R-VA) office wrote a loophole into the House version of the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge Act (STOCK) exempting Congress members’ spouses and children from having to report stock market transactions over $1,000 in a timely manner.

The Senate version of the bill requires these transactions be reported within 45 days by both its members and their families. But a memo from the Office of Government Ethics, which oversees all federal executive branch employees, used the House version, telling them spouses and children were not subject to the rule.

Neither of the bill’s Senate co-sponsors, Scott Brown (R-MA) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), knew about the discrepancy.

“I mean, bottom line, we’re supposed to have that level of transparency and have us be treated like every other member of the United States,” Brown told CNN’s Dana Bash. “Bottom line, if we can’t do it, then — sorry, if they can’t do it — then we shouldn’t be able to do it as well.”

The law, which bars members of Congress from trading stocks based on information they get for work purposes and requires them to register any stock transactions over $1,000 within 45 days, was signed into effect in April, and was praised at the time for being a bipartisan effort.

But Cantor had drawn criticism for introducing a House version of the bill that stripped provisions requiring political intelligence consultants to register as lobbyists and stripping pension benefits from members found to be corrupt.

A spokesperson for Cantor’s office confirmed it made the changes to the bill, but would now seek ways to remedy the situation.

“It was not the intention of the House to differ with the Senate-passed bill with respect to application to spouses and dependent children. We did not believe at the time that we had differed from what the Senate had done,” spokesman Doug Heye said. “Since new information has been brought to our attention with respect to this discrepancy, we are reviewing our options regarding transaction reports in the House of Representatives.”
