It actually has effects on humans.

"Nepeta cataria is slightly psychoactive and most people who don't consume drugs often feel a calm sense of well being after ingesting it. The plant also has properties which might bring relief to people suffering from mild insomnia. But if taken in excess, it can cause nausea and vomiting.

The main chemical that causes psychoactive effects when a person uses Nepeta cataria is nepetalactone. It has antibacterial (kills bacteria) properties and is a mild sedative that can reduce fever, nervous and muscular spasms, or convulsions."

Now I'm not saying go out and smoke a bunch of catnip, but It really does effect humans. It had a surreal effect on my friend and I when combined with some good weed.

Yes it DOES have effects on humans and is a constituent of many herbal remedies.
But as you have read, there's no use for catnip in terms of getting "high;" it is an anti-anxiety sedative.

Just because it is being called "psychoactive" doesn't mean you're getting high - it means it is acting on/with your brain chemistry. Caffeine and Chocolate are also psychoactive; that doesn't mean you should go smoke them to get you high.

That being said, I've known folks who roll it up with their weed to help reduce cannabis-induced anxiety. Actually, I just smoked some with one of those people on Saturday night. It tasted minty, but I did not personally notice any other effects. He swears by it for combating the anxiety of "getting too high too fast" (in his own words).

There were other anti-stress herbs in the smoking mix though. Not exactly sure what all was in there as it was a bulk remedy mix from a local herb shop (thus the packaging wasn't labeled). Other than taste, I didn't notice a thing.

Most people I know to have used this herbal blend did so to combat anxiety and irritability while trying to quit smoking tobacco. They said it helped.

Indeed you are right, but I actually got high on it. Like I said I smoked some "catnip oil" on top of some great bud, and it acted on the bud. I have a high tolerance and this was a strain I had a lot of and was smoking it daily, and when I topped it with catnip oil I got the feeling of when I first started smoking, I got all giggly and colors were bright and Vivid, it was a short lived high, but it helped notch the weed up to another level, mind you this was "catnip oil and not just catnip.

This was an intresting post.

Thanks WW for the info.

Though I don't think I will ever try this (I have not had to much experience with the anxiety aspect of cannabis) it is an intresting tid-bit.

I think the major lesson here is tolerance and knowing it wink.

I think I would go without before I would smoke some catnip! If your weed smells and tastes like catnip then you might want to reconsider what your smoking on!
