Mangled Meditations #6 “Frittata”

I might very well have been home sick from school when I first learned the word 'Fritatta' as I watched a public television cooking show assemble one. The chef took leftover spaghetti and sausage and whipped in some eggs and diced vegetables and created a some sort of alien pancake with it. That's more or less what I have done here. Leftover pieces in my dish are from the first five episodes of Mangled Meditations. Unfinished segments, unused sections, and pieces long forgotten are peppered with new directions, fresh samples, and bold inspirations. At the center of the Frittata, is a sound collage that shortly preceded a tragic event in my life which I remember escaping from with the creation of Musical Palsey. This piece, “Summer of 93”, has been deboned, sectioned, and reconstructed to form the second half of the show. “Summer of 93” was sent on cassette to the Metamundane Initiative, who created an album called "I'm Cutting My Looly Teeth – The Wrist Cocked, Ready to Strike" which was one of the driving forces behind my first Musical Palsey album. Metamundane Initiative responded to “Summer of 93” with some interesting recordings of their own and this is also dolloped on top of the whole fried, baked, and cleverly plated dish: Musical Palsey's Frittata. So, Take a hit of something, or several and ponder what the hell is going on as you digest Musical Palsey's sixth 43 minute episode of Mangled Meditations.

On this year's immense Big Chill special of the Dopecast, the chaos and carnage commences with the Dopefiend rounding up the troops in the DopeTent and talking to Son of Gonzo about whether he should kick off the festivities by dropping acid or MDMA and why he's arrived at the Chill with a horde of followers, as G13 crawls along the floor in a nitrous oxide reverie. Next, the Dopefiend talks to Max Freakout about how the Big Chill security are clamping down on nitrous this year and the Dopefiend's introduction to Ketamine at this year's Chill, before Son of Gonzo poses the question of how the Chill has affected the Dopefiend's life. Next, the Dopefiend turns to G13 and asks him about his first night at the Chill and his anticipation of trying LSD for the first time, before introducing Mt. Samson to the Dopecast and asking how he's enjoying his first festival experience, then turning back to Max Freakout and getting his verdict on his recent trip to Peru for the Amazonian Shamanism Conference and several psychedelic ceremonies. Having dropped the first part of today's acid dose, the Dopefiend reconvenes on the hillside by the "Illusion" art installation made up of huge glowing white balls with Son of Gonzo, G13, Faraday and Mt. Samson, as the acid vs MDMA controversy continues, and the Maui Wowi vapes fly around, and the conversation covers topics such as how LSD differs from mushrooms, and what a low dose like half a tab will do to you, and the phenomenon of stomach cramps with MDMA and mushrooms and how to avoid them. Next, having eaten more acid, and it having kicked in, the Dopefiend talks to Faraday about his experience of half a tab, and giggles uncontrollably with G13 and Son of Gonzo, while Mt. Samson maintains a clear head and discusses ketamine with the Dopefiend, before the Dopefiend turns to Max Freakout, who recently changed his mind and swallowed a tab. Shortly afterwards, the LSD has taken our intrepid trippers further still as they loll around on the grass in front of the main stage observing open and closed-eye visuals, before heading back to the Dopetent to throw the dangerous addition of nitrous oxide into the mix as Max Freakout burns a piece of amazonian wood, much to the amazement of everyone nearby, and much hilarity is had determining what happens "after this", and what "this" even is. Finally they manage to leave the Dopetent in search of the toilets. Several hours later, and still tripping hard, the Dopefiend and G13 are slightly more able to talk, and they throw some ketamine into the mix while reflecting on the earlier tent chaos as the sun sets and the light changes, bringing a different colour to the experience as Thom Yorke performs in the background. After a musical interlude from Big Chill headliner Lily Allen featuring Professor Green, the Dopetribe gather the following afternoon to look back on Acid Friday: first, the Dopefiend and Son of Gonzo attempt to chart their progress through the trip, then the Dopefiend talks to G13 about how the day's been spent preserving energy for tonight's festivities, and what the plans are for a huge Saturday night before the pair both knock back a double whammy each of top-quality love hearts to kickstart a loved up large one. Next, the Dopefiend turns to Jay K and Flick, who follow suit along with Lol and Stubbs by guzzling some home-made capsules. Shortly afterwards, the energy has started to buzz, and the DopeTribe have gathered again at the "Illusion" art installation to preview the coming night. The Dopefiend talks to Stubbs about his experience of the Big Chill, before heading over to Flick who helped create the fluorescent make-up and headgear, and then turning to Lol who's enjoying his first Big Chill and loving it, before returning to G13 who's already topping up on crystals. Next up, the Dopefiend, Jay K and G13 give a post-Roots Manuva update from the depths of the crowds in the main arena while giving a special mention for the tribe members who haven't been able to make it to this year's Chill, as well as those who have made it but haven't managed to unite, and then talk to Son of Gonzo who's trying to gather his troops. Not long after, the Dopefiend and Son of Gonzo are talking gibberish when the Dopefiend breaks his personal smoking ban by accepting a blowback delivered by G13 in the run-up to a literally riotous set by M.I.A., and the Dopefiend talks to Son of Gonzo about whether he'll ever enter the "real world". In the peak of an extraordinary MDMA session, M.I.A. kicks off a wild stage invasion by inviting the Big Chill crowds to join her, and the Dopefiend talks to Limbo, Jay K, Son of Gonzo and G13 about the extraordinary scenes before them. Later, after the M.I.A. performance, Son of Gonzo tries to rope strangers into a group singalong, and refuses to answer questions from the Dopefiend unless he sings them, then later still, deep in the crowds, the Dopefiend's attempts to speak to the general public are spoiled by the throbbing bass. Well into Sunday morning, the Dopefiend and G13 drop yet another pill before heading off into the night. The following evening, after a very slow day, the Dopefiend, G13 and Jay K are stepping up activities with more pills, ketamine and crystals while discussing how the musical performances at the Chill are never long enough for the insane cocktails of drugs put together by the Dopetribe, how the festival's new ownership has affected the vibe, the notable absence of chewing gum on the site, what's going into the druggle-and-squeak for the Sunday night fun, and the sheer beauty and love that can only be experienced at the Chill. Shortly after, as our drug explorers head towards Gregory Isaacs, the Dopefiend, Jay K and G13 encounter Stubbs as he drops his first Sunday-night crystal capsule and Lol as he goes back on his plans for an easy Sunday, and then later still the Dopefiend finally manages to catch up with Pothead in the crowd for Lily Allen, who's eating truffles and toking vapour, and then as Monday morning begins, the Dopefiend talks to Liam and Son of Gonzo while stepping up the MDMA dosage by adding some riddler tablets into the mix and talking about Dopestock. Finally, on Monday afternoon, the Dopetribe are well and truly exhausted as the Big Chill shuts up shop for another year and the Dopefiend, G13 and Max Freakout look back on a weekend of carnage. The Dopecast returns to the Dope Den next week!
