The one and only Jack Herer will be missed forever.

(SALEM, Ore.) - The sad news has been confirmed. Jack Herer, author of Emperor Wears No Clothes and renowned around the world for hemp activism, has died at 11:17 a.m. today, in Eugene, Oregon.

Jack Herer suffered a heart attack last September just after speaking on stage at the Portland HempStalk festival. The last seven months have proven to be a huge challenge to the man, with several health issues making his recovery complicated.

Jack Herer's health has been poor lately, this last week there have been reports of the severity, and an outpouring of prayers on his behalf.

"It's shocking news, even after these last seven, trying months," said Paul Stanford, THCF Executive Director.

"Jack Herer has been a good friend and associate of mine for over 30 years. I was there when he had the heart attack at our Hempstalk festival and I know he wouldn’t appreciate the quality of life he's endured these last months. Still he will be greatly missed. I honor his memory."

"No other single person has done more to educate people all across the world about industrial hemp and marijuana as Jack Herer. His book is translated into a dozen different languages, it's a bestseller in Germany," added Stanford.

"The Hempstalk stage will forever be the Jack Herer Memorial stage. And, a Memorial is planned to be built where he fell that day," Stanford said.

"His legacy will continue to inspire and encourage for generations to come."

this is sad news...my sympathies to his family and all of us who called him a friend

NORML is saddened to report the passing of Jack Herer, the founder of the modern day hemp movement. Jack suffered a heart attack after speaking at last year’s Portland Hempstalk event, and had been in a physician-induced coma for several days afterward. The past seven months have been a struggle to recover for Jack – he awakened from the coma and had been making progress in regaining his health. Friends and family confirm that Herer, known throughout the world as ‘The Hemperor,’ passed away on Thursday, April 15, 2010 at 11:07am Pacific Time in Eugene, Oregon. He was 70 years old.

Jack began his cannabis activism in earnest in the early 1970s when he “swore to work every day until pot was legal, … or [he] turned 84.” Throughout the next ten years he led several statewide marijuana legalization efforts on west coast, primarily in California and Oregon.

Jack received worldwide attention in recognition in the late 1980s and early 1990s for the publication of his seminal work, The Emperor Wears No Clothes, which has now sold over 600,000 copies — making it the most widely read marijuana law reform title ever published. The book’s tagline, “How hemp can still save the world,” introduced hundreds of thousands of activists to the environmental and industrial uses of cannabis, which in turn relaunched the modern day hemp movement and global hemp industry. While researching his book, Jack unearthed a copy of the long-lost United States Department of Agriculture film, “Hemp for Victory,” which documented the federal government’s previous support for domestic hemp cultivation.

Jack’s dedication to cannabis activism was the subject of the 1989 film documentary, The Emperor of Hemp. Shortly following the release of the film, Jack suffered a stroke, which temporarily limited his speech and mobility. However, by mid-2000 Herer appeared to have made almost a full recovery from his illness, a feat he credited to the power of hemp’s therapeutic properties.

Today Jack’s name and memory lives on in the hemp activism of the millions who were influenced by his words and passion. The popular cannabis strain Jack Herer also bears his name.

As I tip back my third glass of whisky tonight, I mourn the passing of some one great. My pain numbed and my mind relaxed, I look back with regret at having not achieved such great things as Jack has done. His accomplishments serve as an incredible motivator and example to everyone.

It was reading the Emperor wears no clothes while renovating the Herb School that caused me to quit my mainstream job and dedicate my life to helping to end cannabis prohibition.

he was the coolest guy ive known that was an actor. he even was in this game called brutal legend right before this started i think because the game was supposed to come out years ago but they must have had his voice on the game already. hes pretty funny in the game u should check it out.

My heart goes out to his friends and family, I didn't know the man personally but have great respects for what he has sacrificed for all us smokers/cultivators. He was and still is a legend in the field and will be greatly missed.

The corrupt law in north America has declared that the marijuans laws are not hate crimes but we all know it is not true.

We all know wny and who started the big lie,we know all the names of the sick people who only wished to gain forthemselves.

We all know it is about the hemp and how it is the plant that can save our planet.

We know how the seeds can feed us and the rest of the plant can be used too,we know we can use it for fuel.

We know that at one time it was used by all and even payed our taxes.

We know it is a sick and evil force that has made us all look like it is us who are evil and we know all the facts because of great people like Jack.

It is now time to turn the tables on all those that tell us we are the bad ones,it is time for US to imprison them for there hate and corruption.

The DEA should all be inprisoned in my opinion,I smoke it every day and it is because I not only am given the right to smoke it I will take the right to smoke it because I am a free man.

And in the opinion of a free man you should be put up against the wall and shot and pissed on since you are nothing but hate and your laws are 100% corruption.

We have all the facts and there is no need for any educated person to be fighting and upholding such laws as they arre all based on hatred and racism.

It is time to rise up people after all there is no longer any need to do any studies to find out the affects of cannabis since we have all the facts.

Any facts (allmost allways good ones)not yet known about cannabis it is because we have not been given the right to really trully study and use it with current technology.

We should never give up the fight to free marc and when we demand the freeing of Marc we should also demand the release of every person ever placed in prison for any marijuana offences.

When marijuans is finaly legal we should round up every person that fought to keep it illegal and imprison them like all dea and every politician that stood so bravely infront of cameras telling the world we are all bad people for our drug use.

We should fine and imprison people/companies that donated money to keep marijuan illegal.

Inprison them all for their crimes against humanity and for all the lives they have persecuted and destroyed.

I tell people to read the emporer has no clothes all the time because it realy trully is the one book that explains it all in the world of cannabis.

I think it would be better if we did the right thing, and let it slide. You can't torture people into being good, and it will only corrupt our movement to hold such resentment. Half the reason that cannabis is still illegal, is that the people who smoke it hide in closets and basements instead of standing up for their right to exist for our own purposes. You can't really blame the oppressor for being oppressive when our side for the most part hasn't stood up for our own.

Let's try to set a better example for our children, instead of being the other side of a very fucked up coin.

ocnorml I agree and do understand what you are saying but I guess it depends on how you view it I mean tell the jews it does not need war crimes tribunal.

Tell them that when they find those who did war crimes against the jews that they should just let it slide.

I mean I really do understand your views but it is time to let them know that when they spread their hatred it is only a matter of time and peacefull protesting no longer works.

Like you say it is time for the tokers to stand up for themselves and get tough.

This is why I have made up signs and banners to show my suport and for two weekends in a row I have sat out on highway manning my signs.

I have my signs at the entrence to my community so all those who enter will know this is a town with people who fight for their freedom.

If we all did what Marc asked and go out on a street corner with your signs of support for just two ours on your weekends or spare time it would educate the people to wake the hell up.

I plan on being there with my signs for as long as it takes,and if we had more people who would do the same we could keep those signs up untill we get what we want.

From what I have seen I and just a few others have been brave enough to stand up not just for ourselves but for Marc aswell and stand prous with their signs.

Like I keep saying people they persecuted me for a reason,the last thing they ever want is for the people to beleive in me or take my advice.

I have been discredited with their "character assasination" and so untill the people demand an investigation into the accusations I have made then they will continue persecuting others.

I never knew the man but thanks to this thread I have learned about his legend, his legacy and for the things he stood for. As such he will continue and the purpose of this thread has been fulfilled as long as we all can just remember.

Barely 24 hours ago I read a thread for new members on this forums and it said to mourn and having lurked on here for awhile I thought I knew what that meant. Sitting here now actually trying to write a response... its different.
