Hi,
Lots of techniques producing Leds have changed in the past 3 years, they've had my attention since I work with them. But, at the moment I still started growing again using CFL due to... $$$.
I'd also like to build my LED-panels, it seems much & much cheaper as a commercial version. Choosing the right Led is a bit of a problem though. New generations of Leds "almost" seem to double their output in... the same rate GBs on HD's double. I guess using 1-watt Leds won't be a problem at all... as long as they're one of the latest generations. Leds produced "yesterday" may be inadequate for our hobby, but they're still sold a lot unfortunately.
I just checked Ebay. With $450 for 1000 .5 Watt Leds, I'd probably need another $50-80 for the power supply and electronics. Add another $40-60 for assembly & cooling stuff and the job would be finished. That would give me 500Watt for ~$575 which sounds... very appealing.
Unfortunately, the cheaper Leds get, the harder it seems to find the right dataspecs. Some 5watt sellers also ask the same other sellers ask for a 1watt LEDs, which makes me wonder what type of LED I'd really get. So, finding the right LEDs and not getting ripped off will be essential.
Since some commercial growlights seem to prove themselves I wonder what brand/types of leds are used in those lights. I know they're red&blue (mostly), but with more exact info it shouldn't be too hard to find similar and perhaps newer/better LEDS.
So, if anyone knows... please respond.
B.T.W. At my job we're assembling electronic displays for fuel prices (those bright red ones...). Sofar I did collect a lot of PCB-boards that didn't meet the standards. To get the spectrum right I'll still need loads of blue leds, but I hope the red light will be a nice addition when flowering my CFL-garden.
Last but not least, It wouldn't surprise me when LED-growlights, which function good today will be seen as totally inefficient tomorrow. That... also bothers me a little, I might buy some nice growlights (with a lifespan of 10 years) for a lot of $$$ now, but in 3 years I probably get the same amount of lumens for "allmost" nothing.
So, I'm still hesitating to switch to LEDs completely, but they sure have my attention.
