What I’ve found to be the most amazing thing about Marc Emery’s extradition is how many in Canada are dismissing it as if it wasn’t a big deal.

Some say that 5 years is not a long time and that it will be over in a blink of an eye. Some say that Marc is a loud asshole and he deserves what he gets. Some say that this is exactly what Marc was looking for, to become a martyr for the cause. Some say that he will turn this around, organise, and rally people in jail to the cause. Others attest that since he is so well known, people will treat him with respect and he will have an easy time of things. Etc …

Here is my take:

1) Going to jail for 5 years for anyone that has lived a free life will be devastating. Once he is handed over to the US, his life will no longer be his own. He will become a product of a corporation. If he pisses off the wrong people he will be disciplined by one of the most brutal institutions on this planet.

2) No pot head chooses to go to jail. 5 years in jail for many of us would be equivalent to a death sentence.

3) Just because Marc maybe an asshole it doesn’t mean he should be fed to the wolves. Over the last little while I’ve actually flipped out on a few people who had the audacity to imply that he deserves what he gets.

4) He is going to a Federal prison. He is a loud, sometimes obnoxious, hockey loving white boy from Canada, and he is going to get eaten alive. There are many haters in jail and they couldn’t give a rats ass who he is. Many of them have never heard of Marc Emery and they will initially laugh at the idea that he is “the prince of pot”. After the laughing stops they will most likely receive great pleasure from fucking with this so-called prince.

5) There are many people in Canada, including Vancouver, that have not heard of Marc Emery or what he is or has done. Even less will know of him in the US. Especially a Federal jail where some have lived for many years. Marc is not going into custody as a famous activist. He is going to jail as a little white boy that couldn’t punch his way out of a cardboard box. He is in deep shit.

I have no advice for Marc other than this (note: I’ve never spent any time in jail but have thought about what would be the best thing to do to serve your time in peace), if he can, he should try to teach anyone anything that they want to learn. From politics and economics, to mathematics and English. Anything that will give him a certain amount of good will, which will hopefully develop into some protection, from both inmates and guards.

One more final comment, my gut feeling is that Marc will not be returning to Canada alive.

Yea that first post was a little crazy i think. but that's just me...

Sure there will be people there that wont take kindly to him, but the man has a way with words. For sure he will have a rough time, especially in the beginning.. but the longer he's there for SURE the more respect he will gain im confident about that.

Who knows, the top dog in the pen might know who he is and what he stands for and that could mean his protection from day 1.

You just never really know.

Hope you're right kRoNiKtOkEr, but I'm not holding my breath for a best case scenario.

It's amazing that we are actually witnessing a Canadian being sent to a US federal prison for selling seeds. Just like the innocent inmates that have been framed and are serving time in jail, Emery will be at the bottom of the food chain there. I don't think all his fast talking is going to save him, if anything, it will be a liability for him.

5 years for a 20 year old or so is 1/4th of their life.

About 50% of the living they actually remember doing.

If not the end of a life, it's the end of a "acceptable" life in society. Too many young people spend that much time in jail, where they have to re-learn how to live. Many are cycled in and out afterward because of the new rules they've learned to live by to survive.

I know this is not really about Emery, but it's about all the youth who are wasted by Prohibition, another reason to fully repeal and pardon those harmed by such an outdated policy.

EDIT: In terms of Marc, you know, all the activism and work to repeal prohibition is work against the major main source of funding of most(if not all) gangs/organized crime.

I'm one of those ppl for whom a 5 yrs prison term would be a death sentence, even if I survived 5 years inside, the diet and the stress would make me an old man by the time I get out as I dont do well on a diet of processed food and am so sensitive to noise that certain tones hurt like physical blows and I'm only 31.

Don't expect gangsers to be sympathetic to a man who has literally spent millions drying to dry up their black market. I'm all for legalization, but gangs don't want it because they will no longer make huge profits selling it, thus crippling their cash-flow and influence.

I hope he isn't extradited and if he is that he maintains his positivity and is treated as best as possible. But if he's kept in a US Federal pen for "aliens" then he'll be lucky not to go crazy.

I'm 24, and a five year prison sentence would not feel like a death sentence. Sure it would feel like forever, but not a death sentence. If I was a gang leader who's gang smuggled hard drugs into Canada. I'd order a hit on marc to shank marc to death for trying to end drug prohibition, as well as bad mouthing gangs. Because he'd be fucking with my business as well as talking shit about my people. So I agree he may not come back alive if he's housed with gangs.
