I usually don't grow tall, and I use containers with soil, ISM uses the barrells. I'm thinkin of trying that out next year, and I would sink them at least half way, an like you said put holes in the bottom and have some good compost under the barrels so when the roots get out o the barrel they get a good boost. For weed control get some straw and put it around the base of the plant. will hold moisture and keep weeds down.

ISM is the master at using barrels hahahaha. I put 1 plant in a barrel this season, will be doing it for every plant outdoors from this point on Cut off the bottom of the barrel Anders, put that directly into your hole. I just can't wait for the next season to come around
