Does the enviroment influence the ratio of male to female plants? I had 5 Maui Waui seeds that all ended up being males...bummer. Well I have recently came across some Northern Lights and Bubble Gum seeds. 5 each. I don't want to end up with all males again. I've never had this problem before, I'm afraid that I may get all males again.

What can I do to possibly influence the higher ratio of females to males. I did alter my soil with lime, to buffer the soil, With the 5 Maui Waui seeds. Everything else is basically the same.

I have a very basic setup with a 400 watt HPS cool tube growing organic.

It does happen.
Last year I had 65% male to female.
This year I had maybe 10% male to female.
Didn't do anything different but use different seed sets.

If you've never had the problem before, then yeah, it was likely just the beans.

how do you start your seeds?
I have only had 1 of 9 seeds male since i have started growing (usually 1 or 2 at a time) and i start them with CFL's. And i read somewhere females like the cooler temps. My room is usually 18-22 i would guess and they actually love it.
Then again it could just come down to the luck of the draw.
hope this helps in some way.

Thanks for the timely replies guys!!!

I germinate the beans in paper towels then once the white root is about half inch long I place directly into soil and propogate. It just may be the luck of the draw. I scored 9 seeds of some unknown strain last year and all of them turned out to be females. My luck has been really good as of late. I guess it's the law of averages gettig the best of me.

I'll try lowering my temps. I also read that a soil medium with good levels of nitrogen produces more females too.

environmental conditions play a role for sure, read this article, its about how the seed companies treat female plants with chemicals so they become hermaphrodites, then they take that pollen and pollinate female plants that they grow under certain environmental conditions to produce feminized seeds.

Feminized Seeds

Ahh. Luck of the draw . I have the same thing happen both ways, under identical conditions.

Ive done a ton of homework, and have alot of experience in this area...Many might not agree but growing environment has alot of influence on final sexual outcome.many grow tips for higher % of females in several books out!Jorges, greg greens growers and breeders bible all 3 have excellent info on these topics!

one of the most missunderstood grow topics are
from inexperienced growers startn from seed.when startn from seed you should wait to see preflowers (especially sativa's)before moving a mj plant to flowering phase.preflowers are easiest way to show plants maturity, and moving b4 plant is mature can stress cause'n more males, herms and weird growth resultn.biggest reason feminized have bad results!

this topic is explained much easier in Greg Greens grow/breeders book.is not BS,look it up!This is not the case w/clones! Clones are mature and dont need ANY veg time b4 switch!
forceflowering from clones is not the same!
good luck PEACE!!

lol sorry my question wasn't specific enough i just noticed. what i meant was after germination, do you put them under HID right away, or start them with cfl's?

I have a large 125 watt CFL I use after germination. I do that until I see 2nd or 3rd set of leaves then I put them under HID. But not too close.
