I don't think OCNORML is going to say anything bad about hunting,or Jack Russell Terriers.Race, yeah we will take a .22 pistol, sometimes when you take 4 dogs you don't need anything but a crowbar. They all had locator collars because they go in holes after stuff. It really is a blast, and the farmers love us because we can get rid of a hog city in a hayfield in a couple days. There are 5 of us with a total of 7 dogs that go thru barn haylofts during the day hunting for coons.2 are women,3 are menfolks. We need them in case of needing to dig or move haybales. It's exciting and we love to watch the dogs work together. They all get along fine and enjoy doing what they were bred for.Thats what us hicks do.

.22WMR, nice round. Checked out the .17? flat to a 100yds.; kiks the shit outta a .22. .17 vs. .22 Race; I regret to tell you that Winchester 40 grain hollow points carry an obvious advantage over .17 HMR. Yes, if you want to shoot rodents all day, the little bottle necked pipsqueak will work. If all I`m hunting is ground rodents and tree rodents, I much prefer shooting .22LRRF in the CCI Mini Mag brew, and CCI .22 CB Long for tree squirrzles;CB ammo doesn`t travel far. Frankly, I would hesitate to try flooring a coyote with the 17. I was entirely unimpressed by the penetration test on cactus pads, the 17 fragmented before it reached 2" of penetration; whereas I consistently got through and throughs on coyotes at 100 yards. There is a whole lot more about 17 caliber rifles that make the added cost of owning one enough for me to reject the novelty and hype. .17 HMR, 17 grain V-Max = ME 245 ft. lbs., 185 ft. lbs. at 50 yards, 136 ft. lbs.at 100yards 22 WMR, 40 grain JHP = ME 324 ft. lbs., 230 ft. lbs. at 50 yards, 162 ft. lbs. at 100 yards.

OCNORML enjoys hunting Whitetail deer. We changed the subject, and found to our delight that Aggies who smoke weed still enjoy bloodsport. I just hope someone knows how to do the doctorin` in case a dog or a person loses a fight with a raccoon. They probably do not get as big where you are, but 40+ isn`t uncommon in the deep South. Terriers. Damn good dogs.
