Because it hosted a lot of people's pictures here in CC. A lot of red X boxes are going to plague the forums now. 
This is not true a red X does not appear if your avatar is not hosted. If you are affected by this & few people are you simply have no avatar.
Example :
Type in "http://www.cannabisculture.com/forums/uploads/1174995-JodieRhiannon.jpg" into your avatar section in "My Home" you will notice that a red X does not appear but what does show up is explained above.
