This is my '08 crop. These've been inside for 2 months. I hardened 'em off for about 10 days-2 weeks. Had a frost or 2 but MJ is ALOT more resistant to frost than most seem to think. At least the ones i've grown handle it pretty well. Let me say, a "frost" is NOT a freeze. I was surprised at the amt of roots these guys grow. These first 2 pics are of the plant in her pot and after i took the pot off. Some (most) of these roots appear to be growing UP! once they hit the bottom of the cup they grew wherever there was some soil. Guess i shouldn't be surprised.

Here's my setup. Will keep Y'all posted as the year progresses. Got a few more chilly night to go here, but i think they'll be ok. They're suffering a little stress at the change, but weeds are pretty hardy. Some weeds in my garden still grow even after i pulled 'em up by the roots and just thew 'em on the ground.

Nice patch. It will be nice to see it full of buds. What will you do about males?

I'll try and get a little pollen out of some of 'em, if i can get it before the ladies start budding. otherwise, just gotta get rid of 'em.

the best thing to do with males is to dig them up and put 'em in a pot and bring 'em back inside to collect pollen.

By then, frmrboi, i'd need a pretty big pot. Last year they were 6' tall. I will try andd get some pollen somehow. They're supposed to be some pretty gd strains. The proof will be in the pudding.

not to just keep them alive long enough to shed some pollen, I'd just strip the bottom 2/3rds off and leave the top for a few days till he gives you some pollen. Even a garbage bag would work for a pot.

So, can i just chop the top off, and let it mature a few days. It'd still have some moisture in it. maybe bandage the stem? I thought about just puttin' a bag on him and using same bag over a female branch. Whadya think?

Trouble with bags is they act as greenhouses and the heat & humidity builds up.
Many people claim they just wait till the top is getting flowers that ready to open and cut it off and put the stem in water, but it didn't work the one time I tried it.
I've never done outdoor pollen harvesting so I don't know what's best. I still like my plan of digging up the best male and stripping the bottom 2/3 growth off to compensate for the loss of roots and bringing it indoors by a sunny window to let the flowers open away from the females.
Usually the males appear weeks before the females are ready, so you got plenty of time to decide what's your best option.
Good luck.

Everything looking good here...I would like to make a suggestion. By diggin up the males, it will likely disrupte the females rootballs, therefore, stunting their growth. If you are not serious about breeding, i would simply Cut the males down. Most of the time, it is easier to have an indoor setup dedicated to male breeding if you are serious about sexing plant and making your own beans...keep up the good work, and do keep us posted
