Flash Gordon’s campaign manager Imagine , like clock work , showed up at 11am as planned and
Flash was ready with his yellow BC Marijuana Party T shirt and $60.00 BCMP sign to go .
Imagine’s teenage sons had created a poster in tribute to Renee Boje

This they taped on to the back of Flash’s expensive BC Marijuana party sign, which Marc Emery had
paid for ,and climbed into the van to head down to the 300 Block West Hastings to the BCMP
headquarters .
Through the back door they met up with David Malmo Levine wearing a gigantic nylon ring master
style mad hatters tea party hat on which he had pinned a green paper marijuana leaf who welcomed
them and urgently set them to the task ,with a crew of other willing volunteers to rolling up a ounce of a
dry sticky mixture of Northern Lights and Super Skunk into as many and varied a number of joints they
could devise .“As long as you can smoke it , it’s an alright joint ” he instructed the dexterous crew .
This task accomplished and after a serious “safety meeting” when a few of the larger joints that had
been rolled were quality tested each participant took up a flag or banner .
Dan ,a compassion club member pushed along Uncle Scam the shopping cart effigy .
A couple ,who had been in on colouring session of posters earlier in the week ,wore the heavy costume
of gigantic puppet clown which looked hilarious with its giant doobie hanging out of its mouth when it
ducked the doorway .
.Everyone carried something , the mid-evil banners or placards , while Dave took the van Cannabis
Culture master webmaster Karlis had prepared with the sound equipment .

Georgia to Howe where the crowd was already gathering on the steps of Art Gallery and on the lawns
on either side of the fountain .
The cheers went up from the waiting crowd and it was like victorious soldiers the roman Colosseum
from some great victory that they were greeted .
The squelch of a microphone was heard from other side of the square .
The city had installed a new chain and the sound van had no access to art gallery stairs so David pulled
up over the curb and was loudly denouncing the city fathers from roof of the van and offering his
famous “hug power rule “ where by anyone in threat of being arrested and hauled away for a victimless
crime such as cannabis or nudity they are to be hugged and not let go of until police leave them alone .
He demonstrated exactly how on the scantily clad lady selling pot cookies with BC Marijuana party
logos barely covering her nipples .
The band the Beefy Treats

five minutes ,introduced the always colourful and amusing Carnival band who could entertain the crowd
without sound equipment and got many jigging .Then he spoke for five minutes more , Flash waving his
BCMP sign behind him at every opportunity and flipping it to show the crowd when Malmo spoke of
the plight of Rene Boje . Flash spotted Richard cowans shinny head in the crowd and whispered to
David that he was there .
David called up Richard Cowan to relieve him while band still set up , and Richard delivered a stirring
dissertation as well until he was relived by Dana Larsen who was interrupted mid toke with his assistant
Momakind to address the crowd as well .
Then it was time for the oddly cross dressed Beefy Treats Lousy Bum on guitar ,Asthma on guitar also
Polyester on Bass and Doc on drums who got everyone started off dancing an laughing with reggae
sound of “Poopsie come Home ” and funky beat of “This World We live in ”. They were helped in
their hip hop tune with by a guy with talent for a unique style of stream of consciousness rap for “Bums
coming over the Frequencies”.
Then broke into Reggae and had the crowd in stiches with the dark humour of “Somebody Poohed in
the stairwell” and continued in the reggae tradition with “Simple Dude ” .
They mixed up Asthma in a kiddie pool of macaroni and poured cheese product and milk over him and
fed the crowd with cheese sandwiches and pop tarts to the funky beat of “roll around in Kraft dinner”.
All this time Flash was weaving and bopping through the crowd . He caught up with red eyed cotton
mouthed Dana Larsen who refused , dry as he was, to drink Coca Cola because it has caffeine and
sugar which Flash offered disgusted as he is that they push it on kids in the first place .
Flash was thirsty anyway so drank it himself .He went with Dana to help David get the boxes out of
back of van which contained 5000 flyers advertising the 30th anniversary of the gass town riot when
police came in on horseback at mayors orders and beat peaceful pot protesters engaged in civil
disobedience .
The Grasstown 30th Anniversary Smoke-In and Street Jamboree is set for August 7th 2001 at 2pm in
Maple tree square in Gastown, Vancouver BC (at the corners of Water,Carrall,Alexander &Powell .
A chance to come finish what the last generation started .
While planting banners in the flower bed beside the sound truck Flash was lucky enough to run into Bill
Smalls who was happy to see Flash’s sign to free Renee Boje .
Bill Smalls who is responsible for precedent setting case in BC ,a victory he won as a grower for the
BC Compassion club.
He is still taking risks and was in court last week at Renee Boje’s bail hearing and is solely responsible
for $5.000 dollars and could serve time in jail if Renee breaks her bail conditions .
Flash pointed out that although he was certainly courageous to support Renee it was not “all that
courageous because anyone who knows Renee would do anything to help her ”and Bill had to agree .
Rene Boje was on the other side of the square selling tickets to the raffle for and ounce of the Northern
Lights and Super Skunk dressed as a fairy with green wings along with the two transvestite costume
nurses who are founding WECAN (West End Cannabis Access Network ) and are founders of
VANDU (Vancouver Area Network of Drug Users ) .
The tickets were going like hot cakes and Rene was working at frantic pace collecting for them .
Flash stood nearby her with his sign and barked at passers by that tickets were available and told
everyone who the costumed lady in fairie costume really was until Renee had to ask him to go away he
was making such a commotion and she admitted she is very inwardly shy .
She told him he was like her friend Raven but thanked him anyway and the mother to be gave him the
sweetest kiss and hug .
The money will go to preparations for the Grasstown Anniversary event so there can be even more
cannabis and entertainment provided .
David gathered everyone together at the gallery steps and contests were held for Best Joke , and Best
joint .
In the joint contest as usual the crowd thought “Bigger was Better “but couldn’t decide between the
two finalists , both put on such a good performance they were allowed to split the 50.00 gift certificate
from the BCMP bookstore and other prizes from puff pipes

Flash lined up for the sign contest and took his place last in line on the steps . The crowd cheered
louder for the Renee Boje side of his sign then they did for the BCMP side but Flash was more intent
on trying to get a draw off the pipe Rolls Royce black hash he was smoking during the exercise and
took the loss well .
Everyone was told to sit on the ground and put up their hand if they were not stoned and joints were
passed out by David Levine at 4:20 pm and passed around to make sure as many people as possible
got a toke and everyone was happy, hungry and high .
Marc Emery was personally keeping busy rolling joints and working the crowd distributing them .
Flash went and stood by him and sang along with old Doug from the compassion club the “King of
Compassion” to “Everybody Must Get Stoned ” and Renee’s Sista , MommaKind ,also expecting a
child ,laughed and smiled like she usually does around Flash .
Renee Boje drew the prize winner and Flash stood next to her on the steps with making her sign
clearly visible and the spelling easier for all who will be visiting her web site

Doug got a opportunity when Flash asked Dave to go on stage and sing California Dreaming and receive
warm applause from the crowd before the musically talented Bill Smalls took the stage to finish off rally with
some jazzy Blues .
Flash looked up at the big Birks downtown clock and realized it was six o’clock and the Stranjahs in da
Nite Cannabis Day Party was due to open its doors at 6:30 pm .

300 block West Hastings and although a line had already formed were in time to get an excellent band near
the stage and were able for this event to smoke cigarettes at the tables as well as joints and could order
cheese nachos or pizza or beverages as well as enjoy the cookies peppered with cannabis and Thai Tea
that came with admission . Because they were members of the compassion club , the always gracious
organizer of Stranjah’s in da Nite ganja soul food catering , Cherise ,let them in for five dollars instead of
usual ten .
This time when the Beefy Treats took to the small intimate stage the crowd recognized their music ,they had
heard it outside the American Embassy ,they had heard some songs repeated at the rally now when the
familiar chords were struck they jumped out of the seats and began shuck and jive to “Somebody poohed
in the stairwell” and sing along and “Poopsie come home ” Its may have been the strong sativa strains going
around ,or the good company he was with but Flash’s spirit rose in a kind of rapture of joy these Beefy
Treats really were “The joy buzzers of Rawk ” ! The day had been so complete he felt himself as part of
a movement that was making history ,marking change and coming closer to freeing the herb and the
oppressed .
