Prisoners Need Support Too!

This thread has been set up to encourage the communication between prisoners and the outside world. The first page of this thread will change on a regular basis in regards to current news and information, so please refer to this page for updates.

Posts of letters or pictures received from inmates are also welcomed in this thread. It gives lonely inmates a sense of belonging and hope to be able to say things to those of us on the outside.

"So what can I do to cheer up a prisoner of war?" you ask?
Here are some ideas on what you can send to any inmate.
-Letters
-Cards (no raised pictures)
-Photographs (printed on paper)
-Drawings/Sketches
-Printouts (CC Forums, passages from books, poems/song lyrics, famous speeches, etc.)
-Canteen Money (most jails will allow money to be sent through the mail to be used for an inmates canteen)

Every institution has different rules for their inmates. Each institution in this thread will have a short description of rules as information from each is gathered.
If there are no rules posted a simple letter is always a safe choice.
Please do not include any "contraband" (i.e. string, laminated items, pornography, and violent material...)

Inmates will be listed in alphabetical order by their last name for your convenience.

Thank you BongPixie!

I am writing letters today.

The mailing address for Shappelle Corby would be a good one to get in this thread as well.

Thanks everyone, for taking a minute out of your FREE day to jot a little note of encouragement to our POW's.

peace and action!

oh thank you so much.

It's easy enough to rattle off LTE's from home, but these people are front line and center. They deserve as much support and the opposition needs to get educated and leave us all alone.

It's worth everything to take some time to communicate with the good people wrongfully jailed.

peace and pot

(also posted in Carol Gwilt Gets 15 Months!)

I just got off the phone with Carol! She even called while Don was here visiting so we all got a chance to have a chat.

Heres the scoop:

Carol is working, as a researcher trying to secure a government grant to look at the effects of prison on women, for $2.50 a day. A fifty cent a day raise is on the horizon. That might seem like a lot but it isn't when a local phone call is 90 cents for 30 minutes. Collect calls are a lot more. If you don't have funds, you don't get to make calls.

Canteen is tomorrow, Tuesday, and happens once a week. If you don't have funds in your account you don't get canteen.

If you want to be a visitor then you must provide Carol with the following:

A note that:
1. shows your current address as it appears on the identification that you will provide when you get to the facility.
2. your birthdate

and then she can add you to the list of visitors she wants to see.

* please note it can take up to 7 days for you to be accepted ONCE she adds you to the list. Please DON'T start calling the number listed below until a reasonable amount of time has gone by. i.e. allow time for your mail to reach her, time for her to fill out the form, time for the facility to approve you...

Then call 604-476-2688 between 10 am and 12 noon on Friday to book for Sat or Sun visit.

*note: please don't book unless you plan to visit as you will cancel the opportunity for others who have waited.

Visiting hours:
Saturdays from 1-3:00pm
and Sundays from 9-11:00am and 1-3:00pm

3 visitors max. in each visit at:
Alouette Correctional Centre for Women
24800 Alouette Road
Maple Ridge, British Columbia
Phone for other inquiries (604) 476-2660

Come clean and ready to be searched and inspected.

Bring your identification that matches the address you provided her in earlier letter.

You may bring cash with you to be added to her account.

You may add a money order to any letter you write to her. DO NOT SEND CASH! Make money order out to Carol Gwilt and just enclose with your letter or card and mail to:

Carol Gwilt
c/o ACCW
PO Box 1000
Maple Ridge, British Columbia
V2X 7G4

If you would rather remain anonymous to the prison security measures then please feel free to email me for my PayPal account info and I will do it for you. There is a place in PayPal to write a note and I will pass those messages along from there.

There are some "contributions to kitty fund" in PayPal already and I thank both CC forum members (both from different states) for stepping up when Carol needs help. Your generosity is touching and will go a long way to helping Carol while she pays the price for all who enjoyed Da Kine cafe, or enjoyed even the thought of a place such as Da Kine.

All mail is opened and inspected so please be considerate when mailing and don't jeopardize her pending freedom.

Thats all for now folks!

peace thru pot,
activism thru joining eNDProhibition
and
freedom from ACTUALLY doing something this year that really truly counts

luv, cannagirl

ps...make sure you say a prayer for your prisoner!

Carol has an appointment with the Warden to speak about her getting access to her meds. She said that she is having some moments that are a little rough..the vertigo is very disturbing. She knows that she won't die without it, it will just get more unpleasant and debilitating as it is allowed to go untreated, and she will be back at square one, or less, by the time she is free again.

This is one of the reforms that must be brought into our prison system. Prisoners are people too and as Health Canada Exemptees they should be allowed access to their medications from the very minute they enter the system.

If heroin addicts and armed robbers with drug addictions can be offered "Marijuana Programs in Prison" to ease the addiction withdrawl then surely they can make the rules so that "Exemptees" can also have access to their natural, safe healthy medicine.

Good information BongPixie!

Yes, Drug War prisoners need support.

I have often thought there should be a webpage or website for Canadian anti-Drug War activist POWs.

Something like: http://www.november.org/thewall/women/women01.html

That's very interesting, as I used to know a medpot patient who was the daughter of Corrections Canada's head claplain. She had mentioned that he said that he was pushing for a non-smoked cannabis medince suitable for use in jails.

I doubt the current government (which doesn't even like the safe tatooing program) would buy into this. They see jails as a form of Darwininan population control, not rehabilitation.

I've written to Goodster a few times. I just sent a postcard to Carol. I figure it's nice to send postcards 'cause then they'll have pictures to decorate their desolate cells. I feel a bit awkward sending personal messages to people I hardly know. I mean, I kind of know them because of reading about their stories, and I've chatted with Goodster in person a few times, but I've never even met Carol, and I don't really know either of them other than as activists.

Does anybody else wonder what to say? I would like to send some supportive words to Schappelle Corby, but what do you say to someone facing twenty years?
