Coca is a stimulant and topical anaesthetic. It wakes you up, gives you energy, and makes your mouth numb if you chew it.
Coca is the raw plant from which cocaine is extracted.
All this discussion of coca is making me nostalgic for the summer I spent in the Pervian Andes. Everybody there chews coca or drinks coca tea daily. I brought a ton of it back with me and I lucked out and managed to get it all through customs in the US. This was of course a couple of years before 9/11 and I imagine it would be much harder nowadays. Anyway, coca grows everywhere down there and you can pull the leaves off the nearest bush and start chewing. It does wonders for the negative effects of high altitude and for general travel sickness. The buzz you get from it is pretty pleasant too. The next time I'm in Vancouver I'm definitely going to stop by and pick some up!

i've heard coca doesn't travel well, but what about dried coca leaves, how well do they work?

I brought several pounds of dried coca to the US from Peru in 1998 and used it to make tea for three or four years after returning to the states. It makes delicious tea (light and sweet, like green tea) that settles the stomach, cures headaches and gives you a nice little lift.
