Dr. Richard Fedorak, director of gastroenterology at the'Good bacteria' tested on bowel disorders such as Crohn's Last Updated: Thursday, October 12, 2006 | 6:14 PM ET CBC News Researchers in Alberta are testing whether a type of bacteria has the potential to treat Crohn's disease and other serious bowel disorders. We usually think of germs as bad for us, but the majority living in our bodies are helpful. The emerging field of probiotics looks at how to take the good bacteria in the right amount to fight disease. In certain diseases, levels of good bacteria living in the digestive system fall. Probiotics or concentrated good bacteria are given to raise levels back to normal. Dr. Richard Fedorak, director of gastroenterology at the University of Alberta Hospital, is involved in clinical trials using probiotics to treat ailments like Crohn's and ulcerative colitis. "What's different about what we're doing now is we're concentrating those probiotics into high concentrations and giving them to people as medicine," said Fedorak. To work, products should contain between one million and one billion live bacteria, scientists say. Fedorak is testing VSL 3, a combination of eight types of good bacteria. In a small study published last year, three-quarters of people with ulcerative colitis showed some benefit, with more than half going into remission. Crohn's disease causes inflammation, ulcers and blockages in the intestinal system. For 10 years, the disease kept Karen Gall of Edmonton from eating anything healthy. Gall was part of a trial testing theprobiotics in combination with surgery. She considers the results amazing. "I can eat a normal meal," Gall said. "I don't have to cook one meal for my family and then wonder what I am going to eat? I can go to a restaurant and find something to eat in most restaurants." Probiotics are also being tested for other conditions, including asthma and diabetes. But the probiotics can cost several hundred dollars a month. Since they are living organisms and not drugs, drug plans don't cover the costs. cbc.ca/health

Hey everyone! I have not been diagnosed yet with anything, but have been dealing with similar symptoms for years. I believe( no facts) that this stems from our water sources. Too much chlorine. After moving off the farm( my dad does water treatment systems and on our farm we use no chlorine) I found that my stomache became too upset to get through a work day. Imagine school. # 2 in a school washroom is a big social no-no but yet it was even harder to explain to teachers why I needed to leave when I asked! After working in resturaunts for a few years I put on some pounds and decided to get rid of them. I found that water with lower levels of chlorine made it easier, but when I created my own diet, I saw amazing results! I began eating a quarter cup of food every hour on the hour( if I woke hungry in the night, I'd have a bite) I eliminated red meat, most processed grains, and switched to organics where I could. After one month I lost 25 pounds- most of which I believe were water and poisons my body retained. I have kept it off easily and it works for anyone because you shrink your stomache. Anyways, the lack of chlorine in my produce stabilized my stomache and the constant food evened out my bowl movements. And, an even better part my anxiety came under control. No more planning every step of my day! I think toking and the cannabis stems that I always sucked on too evened my tummy out. Now, having my store I can not get involved with the goods as I can't risk my business in this small heavily polluted town( nothing like coal burning powerplants with radiation, toxic soils and police corruption) I have noticed living here that my anxiety is back, my stomach is all over and now I don't have the time to eat so often.
We took a trip to the mountains in September and went on a glacier. I drank some of the thousands of years old water and my stomache stayed"cold" for days after and I was at peace physically and mentally. Now, back to normal life and my stomache feels "hot" and burning. Is there a possibility that this is because our stomaches aren't able to battle our everyday poisons?
My mother told me that it is somewhat genetic though because as farback as my great-great grandma had issues keeping food in. But, I have no idea how long chlorine has been in our lives.
My man also has bad heartburn and stomach issues, what are the recommended foods for chrones/ibs? I love to cook and I can make some crazy good recipes!
