Smoke Up for Schapelle Corby Schapelle Corby is a 28 year old Australian woman who was allegedly caught with cannabis in her bag at an airport in Bali. The Indonesian authorities have imprisoned her for 20 years, although the public believes she is innocent! On October 11, 2005 Schapelle Corby's lawyers vowed to go to Indonesia's highest court after a Bali appeal court cut only five years from her 20-year jail term. Please come join us in protesting Schapelle Corby's unfair prison sentence on October 18th, 2005 from noon-2pm at the Indonesian Consulate located at 1630 Alberni Street downtown Vancouver. There will be speakers, music, petitions to sign and a raffle sale to raise money for Schapelle Corby's defense fund fund with lots of wonderful prizes. My shop, the Urban Shaman, will be contributing an aphrodisiac herb basket as one of the prizes! We are also hoping to get video footage of the event so we can post it on Pot TV and help to inspire people in cyberworld to take action on behalf of Schapelle's freedom. It is important to remember that prosecutors are essentially trying to give Schapelle Corby life imprisonment for unlocked luggage. Few people try to smuggle cannabis FROM Australia TO Indonesia where it normally sells for much less. Normally one can sell it much more safely in Australia for a much higher price. It is now well known that marijuana is smuggled within Australia by baggage handlers using innocent people's unlocked bags between airport connections. They messed up by not retrieving the cannabis placed in Schapelle Corby's bag between Australian airports in different cities. One witness has even come forward at risk to his life to testify to this. His testimony was ignored. The Bali High Court this week shortened Corby's sentence to 15 years following a protracted legal appeal and several trial reopenings in the lower Denpasar District Court. Lead lawyer Hotman Paris Hutapea said he would fight on like a "kung-fu teacher", even though he was doing the case for free and it had already cost him as much as a new Ferrari. The High Court decision was "inhumane" because no other prisoner in Indonesian courts had ever received more than five years for possessing less than 10kg of marijuana, he said. The Gold Coast woman was jailed after customs officers at Denpasar airport found 4.1kg of marijuana in her unlocked bodyboard bag last October. Before the recent reduction to 15 years the prosecutors said they would appeal to the Supreme Court for life in prison even if there were a reduction in sentence by the lower court (the Bali High Court). ReneeBoje Member Registered: 08/26/04 Posts: 107 Loc: Vancouver, BC	The rally went smoothly. The crowd was small but sweet and the sun was shinin' brightly. Everyone showed up with lots of signs and we got support from traffic as people went passed and beeped and some even cheered. A couple of documentary film crews were there and some of our regular rally photographers showed up too to support the cause by documenting the rally. We had a bit of trouble with the authorities at first, but managed to smooth things out and we were able to continue on. Jef Tek filmed it for us and there will be a show to check out on Pot TV soon. Special thanks to the following for donating money for the beautiful signs that we made and all the handouts we printed up: Dana Larsen, Heather, The Vancouver Herb School & The Urban Shaman Thanks to all who helped to spread the word and all who helped to set up and clean up, run errands for the rally preparations, etc. Rallies are always a collective effort. The Warrior Women of Cannabis (our working title) will be organizing more events to support Schapelle in the months to come. Let's keep the pressure on the Indonesian government together by expressing our collective outrage at Schapelle's imprisonment and finding creative ways to continue to raise awareness about her case.
