Old head here boys and girls, and I’m here to tell you that there are no decent bongs out there, nope not a one. There use to be, they were called Apogee Bongs and they were engineered. They had features most of us stoners never even thought to look for. I was just a young fellow and too poor to afford my own at the time. I’ve searched the internet and could only find a handful of references from folks talking about their old friends.

Are there any old heads around here that ever owned an Apogee? Better still, does anyone have a picture of one? We thought they’d be around forever, and pot would be legal and paraphernalia would only get better, but alas [sigh].

I'm a "young head", and have never heard of Apogee bongs. A quick search of the web and a few forums, and I've come up empty-handed. I'm curious, though...what are these "features" that most of us would never think to look for?

Thanks for asking. Part of the problem here is that it was so long ago. The other problem is that I never owned one myself. They were so well thought out but the finer points are only what I can remember people telling me. Anyway here are the major issues:

Cleaning! If you can’t completely disassemble your bong, you can’t properly clean it, and no matter how awesome it looked on the store shelf, after a week and a half of use that thing is gonna be a stinking, festering, cesspit. Even if you are scrupulous about cleaning if you aren’t scrubbing every surface, nook and cranny you’re gonna miss stuff. Go ahead and stick your nose in your bong after it’s been cleaned and dried. Smell that? You’re sucking your KB through that. Of course some people don’t even bother to change the water day to day…. Ewww

Non spill. There were several styles of Apogee bongs, some were novel, others looked ordinary. One way or another they all guarded against that sometimes disastrous and always disgusting tragedy, spilling the bong. Either the water was contained in a chamber or the bong had a sturdy no-tip base or whatever.

Durable. Glass has a lot of fans, but unless your treating your bong like it was a Faberge Egg, sooner or later you’re gonna break it.

Other fucking incredible “I never would have thought of that” features. Like my friends Apogee, it was just big enough to accept ice cubes that had been frozen in a tray (of course the icemaker ice could also fit). If it was filled to the top with ice, when the ice melted the water would be at the perfect level for smoking another round. Not too low to keep from cooling the smoke, and not too high as to splash in your face.

Yeah, I've checked out the ROOR's. They are a good design, sweet and simple. I have more of a problem with fricking pieces of sculpture so ornate they're unusable.

However, you need a bottlebrush to get to the bottom of it, which isn’t too bad but still a pain in the ass. Looking at your Icemaster I see it’s thickly resinated just above the waterline (just like every other bong in North America I dare say). When you smoke it’s all warm, wet, rich in organic compounds, like smoking through the primordial soup.

I can’t get a good look at the base of it, but it’s clearly much taller than it is wide. Loaded with ice, it’s just begging to be tipped over.

And there’s the glass issue. The only glass bong I ever owned lasted all of two weeks. It shattered from thermal shock when the rinse water was too hot. OK my bad, but like I said, sooner or later, you or one of your stoned friends is going to sit on it, or drop it, or… well maybe not if you are conscientious about taking care of it. But who wants to be conscientious when your getting baked?

Honestly, I’m not trying to bust on your bong. I’m just saying, there was once a whole nother level of bongdom. I was hoping to find someone else who had seen it. I feel kind of like a shepherd wandering around town going “hey man, did you see that angel last night?”

No brushes necessary! Pour some Iso alcohol and salt in the bottom, shake it up, and its crystal clear again. If you see any resin on the black label icemaster in the other thread, its probably just been smoked out of a few good times without being cleaned. With a Roor, you can also remove the downstem and bowl, and the glass is super-easy to clean. You can watch the resin wash off the glass under hot water. I hate smoking out of pieces where the resin is so caked up you can taste it in the hit, and the water is three weeks old, green and filthy. Smoking is so much more enjoyable when you get a pure and clean taste from the bud. A lot of people my age don't even care about these things. Sucks that you shattered that soft glass bong. What was this Apogee pipe made of??

I know you aren't trying to bust on my bong, and I'm not trying to bust on this Apogee thing. You should purchase one of my bongs, though... and if you spend that kind of money on one, I guarentee you'll be "conscientious" about taking care of it.

I stand corrected. The Apogee line was all acrylic, as far as I know. I wish there were someone here that actually owned one to speak to their virtues. Hard to tell if they were really super engineered like I remember, or maybe it’s just the rose colored lens of nostalgia. If you bump into any old timers that would have been hitting the bong circa 1980, you might ask them if they ever heard of Apogee.
