Police are backing free cocaine and MDMA drug booths for night clubbers to test the purity of class-A drugs, it has been reported.

Preston, Lancashire, is said to be the first town in Britain to offer the drug-checking service when it begins on weekends in the new year.

The service is reportedly aimed at warning people against "adulterated or highly potent" drugs that could killed them.

However, critics claim the scheme could normalise drug-taking and noting that no drug was truly safe.

Some argue police are advocating drug use and the move would clearly break the law.

The service was being considered as legal because workers opeating out of a caravan would not handle the drugs and any tested would be destroyed, The Sunday Times reports.

The scheme is not entirely new - some music festivals ran a similar service with about one in five of the 300 people to use the service not taking the drugs after testing it, the newspaper said.

Durham University professor of criminology and co-director of the Loop, the group running the service, Fiona Measham, told the newspaper police had been the most supportive and had agreed not to target people using the service.

“It’s a very new service and some people might see it as quite radical, but it’s focusing on harm reduction,” she said.

The National Police Chief's Council reportedly said the scheme could be useful but was still not yet endorsed on a national basis.
