So I picked up a free crockpot and attempted my first batch of cannabutter. Ground up a ounce of trim in a coffee grinder and added the water and melted a pound of butter. I put the crockpot on low and let simmer overnight for about 16hrs. Strained the finished product through a cheese clothe and put in the fridge overnight. Took the butter out and threw away the water.

So I used 1/2 cup and made peanut butter fudge she another 1/2 cup and made some brownies. The fudge is brutal tasting, almost impossible to eat its so weed tasting. The brownies are a little easier to get down but still weed tasting.

I've made brownies before with oil and weed and the brownies tasted nothing like weed and was potent. Not sure what went wrong with the butter, did a cook it too long in the crockpot. I've seen where people only cook it for a few hours in a crockpot and others say 12-24hrs. Should I try melting it down again she add another 1/4 or 1/2 pound of regular butter to the mix?

ok the first thing is you did not do a 1st boil to clear the chloriphil out of it ..I bring my weed to a boil then turn it down to simmer for 45 minutes ..then I dump out the water and refill with clean fresh water ..bring to a boil and add butter then turn it down to simmer 3 to 4 hrs ..then I pour threw a nilon stocking to strain out the weed ..put the bowl in the fridge over nite and the butter rises to the top and hardens..

my butter has no chunks of any plant mattereal in it at all ..just the good stuff you want to infuss into the butter ..

hope this helps ..

Good catch weedmen smile What about also running it through 3-4 filters, which helps remove yet more green ?

i agree doob,I think he maybe able to to still reboil it and run threw filters..but it sounds like he already baked with it and the brownies were terrible ..lol

i find cooking with spices like cinnamon and allspice work well for covering any remaining taste of weed ..in my oatmeal rasin cookies you cant even tell theres anything in them.

also , i make my butter with 2 oz's to every lb of unsalted butter..i like them strong and i tend to use some buds that others would never think of using for butter..

I use almost all bud in mine. I do a double boil. 1 oz bud to a pound of butter. I have aways decarbed in the oven first. Iadd the bud, water, and butter, boil then simmer for about 5 hours, strain through cheese cloth, put in fridge overnight, remove the layer of butter and add to a pot of water, then boil simmer and strain again. Seems time consuming though. Think i'll try weedmans method next time. My butter always tastes awesome though.

Boiling the bud for 45min and then straining and the boiling again doesn't make it loose any potency?

Going to be a while before I have another ounce to work with again since I'm in mid grow so have at least 2 months till ill have any product. frown

The cannabinoids are weakly soluble in water, moreso as the temperature goes up. Just a thought, but what about doing a water cure first, instead of boiling it up, then decarb and make butter? Water cured bud is almost tasteless in my experience...

I like your method Dice, and will give it a try my next go at this. I've been doing a single-boil for years...kinda in a rut I suppose!

Nope smile Luckily the temps needed to boil off cannabinoids are as follows:

Δ-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)
Boiling point:157*C / 314.6 degree Fahrenheit

Cannabidiol (CBD)
Boiling point: 160-180*C / 320-356 degree Fahrenheit

Cannabinol (CBN)
Boiling point: 185*C / 365 degree Fahrenheit

Cannabichromene (CBC)
Boiling point: 220*C / 428 degree Fahrenheit

Since water boils at 100C (such a nice round number, compared to 212F or whatever it is!), and THC/CBD are stable at that temp, there is no loss when heating to a boil.

Decarbing THCA Originin of the following:

Decarboxylation is a chemical reaction that releases carbon dioxide (CO2). This means a chemical reaction takes place in which carboxylic acids loose a carbon atom from a carbon chain. This process converts THCA to THC, the much loved compound with many medicinal and psychoactive effects. When the cannabis drys, it very very slowly begins to decarboxylate and converts THCA to THC.

240° F (115C) for 60 minutes should be enough to decarboxylate any cannabis with a reasonably low moisture content. For material with higher moisture content, the time can be extended but the temperature should not be increased. If you are concerned about losing organic compounds, lower heat can be used but the time should be extended to compensate.

This is why it is crucial that you decarb the kief or bud you're using before you toss it in the boiler. So, set your oven to 115C, make sure to grind up your ganja to get the most surface area exposed to the heat (not technically necessary, IF you heat for an hour), then bake on cookie sheets.

Hope this helps clarify an often confusing topic smile

Spec, almost didn't recognize you with the new avatar smile Love the meerkat by the way laugh was a fan of Meerkat Manor a few years back.

In my opinion cannabinoids are 'not' water soluble, as the amount dissolved by simple water is negligible. Am I right in saying this ?

So if you go through the process of decarbing in the oven then why bother with the crockpot? At that point all you need to do is put it in melted butter and then strain through a filter right?

Simmering in a crock pot aids in the extraction of the cannabinoids from the green matter and dissolve in fat (butter).

You could just run some melted butter through your green, but I'd bet it would make for a much weaker final product.

What do you guys think ?

OK, so I decided to actually look up some data... the solubility of the big three in room temperature water is as follows:

THC: 2.8 mg/L
CBD: 0.0055 mg/L
CBN: 0.0021 mg/L

Couldn't find data for boiling water, but in my experience around a doubling of solubility can be expected.

I had no idea the numbers would be so low... I always kinda figured one was losing around 5-10% to the hot water, it's actually so low it would best be expressed scientifically (unless you were talking about 1 gram of bud in say 1 litre of water), anyway far less than 1%. Interesting...

And yeah, I agree on the long simmer, just rinsing your bud with hot fat won't extract much, the fat molecules are rather big and not as effective as simpler solvents at dissolving other molecules.

Heh, yeah, the meerkat... it sort of jumped out at me while watching a David Attenborough special, felt an irresistible urge to convert it into a GIF and use it here. wink

I do three or four washes when making canna butter. It assists in removing the canna taste and chlorophyll. I also use a crock pot.

After my butter has been strained and hardened, I remove the waste water and I will put the butter back into the crock pot with more water and simmer again for a few hours, strain, harden, repeat 3 or 4 times. I find I have a much cleaner and milder tasting end product.

Hey 5Leaf, long-time-no-see!! Quick question: how much green remains in your budder after the second wash ? I'd think by that point there wouldn't be much left.
