I have a Space Case pollen press. When pressing, should I heat also?

I use very low heat when I press. I crank my convection oven up to 500 for like 10 minutes and then put the press on the OUTSIDE of the oven and leave it there for a couple of hours. The heat on the outside of the oven doesn't even come close to the temps on the inside. I find that this brings out more flavors in my hash but that's just me and my opinion.

Hmmm. Great answer. Your application isn't the stealth I need, but I can heat the deal a bit though.

Yeah when pressing, Ive heated my aluminum toy with a cfl lightbulb until its warm to the touch, but not quite too hot to touch. BE CAREFUL. if the goo is very soft and you heat it, its going to smoosh like taffy, and not do what you want. That level of hash i usually just heat up and press by hand.

That's a good indicator... Warm to the touch.

I would think part of the trick is to remove the puck while warm?

Well, I always weigh my material before pressing and kept the chunks 1 gram or 2. Seemed the more I put in the harder it was to remove. once puck is made, remove endcap and continue screwing the rod and that should push it out. This is what you have right?

I made the same thing out of a metal rod and machined aluminum solderless pipe fittings i found in a box of junk. It looked like a press, except it had no 'end cap" so i had to screw a dime into one of the fittings. (fit perfectly!!) It was the exact same thing except i pressed it all to one end, using a c clamp with no foot, pushing the rod from the open end into the "DIME CAPPED" end.

Ha! That's a great dime store. And that is the press I have. Nice piece of goods. Like their grinder.

I'm now reading where a few people leave the puck in the press for a couple days. Seems it would work to heat, press, cool a bit then remove all in a 15 minute period. I'm I wacked on this idea?

i hate to say it but i will never use a press again... especially a space case. they are made from aluminum & therefore the threads strip easy. i had to ruin my press to get hash out last time i used one.thats not to knock yours or anything, i might have gotten a defective pile of shit for all i know but i figured i would share my experience with 1.

on a more possitive note, when they do work they work great. i went with 250-300 for the oven & 10 minutes. allow to cool & wammers... fresh pressed hash to smoke.

this is the method i use these days.

I need to take a peek at that vid later. We'll see about the press. If it's shit, then so be it. Supposed to be aircraft aluminum, though. The threaded ends are pretty big and knarly.

Looking forward to the wammers

EDIT: Saw the vid. Very cool indeed. Thanks for the link.

RROG....you don't need to leave it in for days but probably just a little longer then 15 minutes. In the past I've got a bit to anxious and pulled it too quickly and had a bit of a mess. This is when everything has the best chance to get all stuck together, IMO. I have lost a press in the past because it did all get stuck together and had to use some brute force to get it all undone and ruined the press in the process. Since getting my new one and taking my time, plus a cleaning after every press, I haven't had any issues.

Since my last post I've read where many leave it in the press at least 8 hours.

So assuming I warm the press, press the hash, keep warm, re-tighten after a few hours and leave in for a total of 8:

Is it easier to remove if frozen, room temp or warmed again?

Thanks for all the experiences

i'm one of those who rush it along, best if it's cool - room temp. warm makes it sticky & the little disc inside comes apart.

Well, tried my first hash making with the Space Case Pollen Press. I was moving buds into jars, trimming small ones off the stems, etc. All on a black plastic sheet. Afterwards, plenty of kief to scrape together into a little pile. I added some kief from my new Space Case grinder and figured I'd give the press a try.

Warmed the case up a little before hand. oops

Added the kief, pressed and warmed some more.

Waited about 5 hours then opened up. Needed a hammer and some reasonable tools to get the cylinders out. They came out, nice piece of hash as thick as a dime. Very amber/ green and soft disc.

Looking at the inside of the case as well as the outside surfaces of the plastic cylinders, it was obvious that there was some powder stuck between the case and the cylinders. Likely from warming before adding the kief. The kief hit and softened, likely.

Next time I'll cool all parts and kief briefly in freezer, then assemble and pour. This way nothing is sticky, and I can tap the kief down in there.

I cleaned the bastard thoroughly with acetone. So we're ready to try again.

I'm starting to wonder if maybe oiling the inside of the tube lightly with olive oil or something similar to see if that would help prevent it from getting stuck when things like that happen. Just a thought......

i know this is an old post, but i was looking for what those packets that remove moisture from jars are called and seen this and had to add my 2 cents. alos rrog i think you are the one that i seen with the packets so by replying to this maybe you can answer my ?. i think there dissedent or something like that. now for the reply....... i have a pollen press and i have had the same problems with hash sticking and getting stuck in the press. here is what i figured out to do..... as for heating the press, all i do is get some really hot water and fill it in a cup. i then tighten the shit out of the press and put it in a ziplock bag. i then put it in the hot water and let it sit until the water cools or whenever i get around to looking at it.(about 30 min) i leave the ziplock part hanging out of the top of the cup so there is no chance of water leaking into the bag. after i take the press out of the ziplock and it goes straight into the freezer for around 15 min.... i think you guys are forgeting that when you heat metal it expands. thats why you all needed the hammer and rod. the freezer will make the metal contract and it will slide out easier, but still might need a little take to get started because the hash melts and bonds to the metal on the inside. another problem i had was when i got the wafer out it was stuck to the dowels and i would need a razor to slice it off. to get around this get a plastic baggie, one that has really thin plastic. take the dowels from the press and push one side threw the plastic bag until it streaches and rips threw. you might have to clean it up a bit after, but this will leave a thin layer of non-stick plastice on your dowels. i do this to both sides and when i take the hash out of the press, it falls off the dowels and is a perfect waffer. the plastic should be streched over the dowel so tight that you can barely see it except for the ruff edge. it should look like a layer of shrink wrap over both dowels. good luck and let me know if this method works for you as good as it works for me.
